Most popular names in your area? (Boys)

DH and I have been struggling with finding a boy's name we both like and finally agreed on Oscar, but I keep reading on threads here about how popular it is in certain areas.

Now I have no clue what names are commonplace around my way (SW London) so I am intruiged to know what you think are the most popular boys names for the area you live in? If you are happy to share where you live and the top 3 or so names, I'd be really interested to hear your thoughts....

You could check out the National Statistics top 100 baby names (here) and opt for a name outside the top 50. That way it's a bit different, without being completely obscure.

We liked Oscar too but the pet association did put us off a bit, if I'm honest.

Wavedancer · 10/10/2008 09:59

Wow, thanks for all the replies.

It's been really interesting to read.....I'm quite surprised how many of my preferred names keep cropping up in areas fairly close to me. I've checked out the top 100 names before but I do think popularity varies quite wildly according to demographics.

As for Oscar and the pet connotation, that's initially what put me off too (it was more DH's choice), but it's grown on me over time. My first choice was Dexter, which some may say is similarly pet-like.

I am surprised people know so many finlays - its still not in the top 50??? my eldest is a finlay - born in 2002, chose it because we did not know any one called finlay!!!! we were in north london at the time we are now in glasgow and there is only 1 other finlay in his entire school - over a 1000 kids. my youngest is Ramsay - dont know any others!!!
