I love it - my DH is welsh and I would have loved Welsh names for my DCs but he wouldn't go for Merlin! They have welsh middle names tho - LLewellyn and David.

MannyMoeAndJack · 23/09/2008 12:23

Yes, like it.

savetheplanetdontiron · 23/09/2008 12:25

yup - we know a Merlin. He is a cute little imp and it suits him down to the ground

Iklboo · 23/09/2008 12:25

I like it but there'd be the connection with the new tv show I bet.
I like Maerlyn as a spelling - though people might think it was Marilyn!

Mimsy2000 · 23/09/2008 12:25

no sorry really don't like it - he will have wizard jokes for the rest of his life.

Pushpinia · 23/09/2008 12:27

I only know one and I think his mother called him it just to be cruel...he was teased very badly but that was prob more to do with him mum being v odd than the name itself.

He's grown up now.

branflake81 · 23/09/2008 12:33

only if he's a wizard

GirlWithTheMouseyHair · 23/09/2008 12:56

i love the name but would worry about being teased...you could go properly welsh though and make it Myrrdin (think it's pronouncde murthin)

I think it is a bit silly tbh. Just too associated with the Merlin. Middle name territory. Llewellyn I like a lot though.

cremolafoam · 23/09/2008 13:14

Know 2 merlins
both teenagers now

dinny · 23/09/2008 13:15

love it

lovely Celtic name

love Meriel too

nooka · 23/09/2008 13:45

I like Meriel, although I didn't know it was Welsh.

frazzledoldbag34 · 23/09/2008 14:28

Only if you buy him a cloak and a pointy hat with stars and moons on it.
Seriously, it's a bit whimsical isn't it?

LouMacca · 23/09/2008 14:36

Awful.

seeker · 23/09/2008 14:41

NO.

"May I introduce our new MP -Merlin Jones"

"And now a word from our Economics correspondent - Merlin Jones"

And then imagine a portly middle aged golf player called Merlin Jones. You're not just naming a cute baby, an impish little boy and a cool teenager, you're naming a man. And anyway, the teenager might not be cool, he might be small and spotty and geeky and the name would be a torment to him.

PrimulaVeris · 23/09/2008 14:58

I knew a Merlin once

He was really weird

EachPeachPearMum · 23/09/2008 15:01

I lOVE it, but DH has vetoed.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 23/09/2008 15:06

We know a Myrddin. In fact, my dd is going to marry him, she announced yesterday

dibdabscribble · 23/09/2008 15:35

Cool. I know an adult Merlin who is lovely.

PuppyMonkey · 23/09/2008 15:37

Don't.

PestoMonster · 23/09/2008 15:37

I prefer it as a name for a cat tbh

wheresBunny · 23/09/2008 17:41

I love it but wouldnt be brave enough!

nuthacuppatea · 23/09/2008 18:45

fabulous!
i knew one who shortened it to Merl. He was a very cool dude! Also like Merryn which may still be used if I have a boy!

seeker · 23/09/2008 19:56

The thing is, the cool dude Merlins you all know would still be cool dudes if they were called David or Trevor. Just imagine what it would be like to be the uncoolest of non-dudes and called Merlin.
