It is a biblical/hebrew boys name. It means happy, rich, lucky.

What do you think?

makes me think of a Chaim Potok book -I think -My Name is Asher Lev?

not sure how I feel about the name. A bit too orthodox for me. I am Jewish BTW.

Alderney · 19/09/2008 12:08

I was actually thinking about this yesterday..!!

There is a little boy at preschool called Levi (although I suspect after the jeans rather than the tribe of Israel) and I was thinking what other tribes of Israel could be actual names in todays world in the UK

Joseph, Benjamin, Dan of course, but then I came up with Levi and Asher which would be fine.

FairLadyRantALot · 19/09/2008 13:13

hm...isn't there a r&b singer called Asher?
It does sound nice, but people might start spouting how chavtastic it is
I don't think it's chav, btw...but...I am sure someone will be around in a moment and say something like that...

I really do like Levi

I would assume you were Jewish. Not that that's a bad thing or anything, that's just the first thought that comes to me.

wotulookinat · 19/09/2008 13:16

Brimful of Asher on the 45...

MrsMattie · 19/09/2008 14:35

Very biblical. I would think a boy named Asher was Jewish. Are you?

It's a strong and lovely name.

themildmannneredjanitor · 19/09/2008 14:37

'everybody needs a bosom for a pillow..'

APatchOverMeEyeballsintheSky · 19/09/2008 14:40

LOL MMJ, my thoughts exactly. I like it a lot though... and the name is cool as well

platypussy · 19/09/2008 14:51

Will def be shortened to Ash though whether he wants it or not.

pramspotter · 19/09/2008 17:29

Nope we are not Jewish. We already have a Noah so we thought we would stick with the biblical thing.

The R&B guy is USher not Asher.

malfoy · 19/09/2008 17:30

I love Noah. Not sure re Asher.

wahwah · 19/09/2008 17:32

Wasn't there an Asher D from So Solid Crew? Probably an Ashley originally. Anyway, Asher is nice.

CoolYourJets · 19/09/2008 17:33

i'm dancing...

Actually and to my surprise i really like it.

There is a character called Asher in the Anita Blake books and he is very cool.

wahwah · 19/09/2008 17:33

Yep, just googled. He was Ashley.

pramspotter · 19/09/2008 17:38

We both like biblical names and have an interest in the bible as a history/literature thing but we are athiests. So it would be a bit weird to have people think we are Jewish or christian bible thumpers or something.

ds has a friend called asher he is lovely and its a cool name.

seeker · 19/09/2008 17:41

I think I would assume you were Jewish too. That's not a bad thing, of course, but I'm an atheist too and rejected a couple of names (can't remember what they were now) which I thought might make people who didn't know us assume we were Christians. Just something to bear in mind.

wotulookinat · 19/09/2008 17:51

I've been contemplating the name all day - and it has grown on me. I think it is prety cool. Kind of like Ashley, but cooler!

minorbird · 19/09/2008 17:57

I think Asher is larvley. I also know a girl called Wre-asher. Looks odd but sounds noice.

sockmonkey · 19/09/2008 17:58

I like it. I have a Noah too, (and a Samuel). May have to bear Asher in mind if I ever talk DH into number 3.
I like Reuben too, but my friend has a boy with that name.

I loved the book 'My Name is Asher Lev' and know the most adorable 4-year-old named Asher, so it's got some good connotations to me and I like it.

malfoy · 19/09/2008 20:36

I loved the book too. May reread it one day.
