I'm not keen on Aggie, but do quite like Nessie, Ness, Nessa as cuter childhood nicknames.

I love it pronounced in the French way, like Anyess, but I fear that's a non-starter in the UK because your poor daughter would have to explain it the whole time. The English Agnes is just one step too near to Doris and Enid for me. I do like old lady names as a rule, too.

Makes me think of witches. Dont know why.

I like it, but then my youngish aunt (in law) has a sister called Agnes so I've always been used to it on a younger person.

Straight from the horses mouth - please don't do it! I have suffered it for 36 years and hate it. I always order things in my dh's name as I even hate saying it aloud. One cool model with the name is not enough to make it hip I'm afraid.

A friend called her little girl this and I was . I've had many years to get used to it and I'm afraid I still don't like it. She's such a pretty little girl and poor thing has a witchy name.

Agyness Deyn's real name is Laura though, she changed it so she would appear "cool".

True, but it's not cool in the sense of manufactured....it's a very old classical name. That's why I like it.

Also love Elsie, which half the world thinks is old lady-ish and the other half think is really pretty and rather stylish.

ooh I like Elsie better than Agnes (have an irrational dislike of Agyness Deyn!!) but I am also partial to a classic girls name! I like Maggie, Edie and Esther too and if ds had been a dd she may have been Betty! But probably not, I would have bottled it and called her something more "common"

Yes littlepushka, and over the years, I have been called all of those and the worse ones too! Actually, to be fair, they are all quite accurate descriptions!!!

MY gran was named Agnes and was most put out when I wasn't named after her as is the tradition in ours an many scottish families to name their children after the g.parents.

My aunt was named Mary Agnes and she absolutely hated Agnes. It's a hard and 'old' name.
