My friend has Hilda in her top three and I said......

...nothing.
She has it as a main contender with Ruth and Susannah. None of them are my style but Hilda I find hideous.
Is it fair to try and put her off, is there a chance it will come back in fashion?
Does anyone here actually like Hilda?

Thatcher's middle name iirc.
Agnes is lovely though.

3andnomore · 23/08/2008 22:00

you think? now, imo Agnes is one of he ugliest names I have heard...and I have a neighbour, who is so super lovely, that has the name...she is a Agnes Gertrude and totally hates it....

brimfull · 23/08/2008 22:10

I really like the name Agnes

My gran was called Agnes and was quite put out when I wasn't named after her apparently.

AbbeyA · 23/08/2008 22:10

I think Agnes is an ugly name-so is Aggie.

choosyfloosy · 23/08/2008 22:12

Hilda is a poor choice IMO but her daughter will be Hilly within about 1 second and that's quite cute.

edam · 23/08/2008 22:16

Given the trend for old lady names, I was wondering when Hilda would make a comeback. I like it but only because my great-aunt Hilda was so much fun. (RIP Hilda, you were a blast!)

whatdayisit · 23/08/2008 22:16

Not only is it horrid, but the 'H' will be routinely dropped by her friends, and she'll hear them yelling "Ilda" or "Ills" across the playground.

scottishmummy · 23/08/2008 22:19

OGDEN

edam · 23/08/2008 22:20

Mind you, my great-aunt hated her name and when she finally went into an old folk's home, told everyone there her name was Penny!

FanjolinaJolly · 23/08/2008 22:22

Hilda is awful.I'm sorry if I am non PC but it is awful.Really.

3andnomore · 23/08/2008 22:23

another ugly name, imo, is Renate....dispite it being the middlename of my mum and the first name of one of my lovely aunts, that sadly died when I was a child...she always read me stories when I stayed over....less her!

nooka · 23/08/2008 22:30

I would have thought it would be more likely to become Hildy or Hills. I don't think there is anything particularly wrong with Hilda as a name. Seems pretty much in the same league as Susannah and Ruth to me. Agnes/Aggie now I do agree is ugly.

kateri · 24/08/2008 01:35

WHat exactly is so terrible about Hilda? I wouldn't choose it myself, but it's ok. I think the sound of it is quite gentle and pretty - at least, compared to something like Gertrude, which I find quite ugly-sounding.

I disliked Hilda at the start of this thread but by the bottom I was quite liking it.

I had a friend that had Edith on her list.

Ethel is probably worse.

Maybe old lady names will make a comeback.

hilda was the name of our beautiful kind and funny great gran who died in February leaving my dd heartbroken.
For that reason I love it

ghosty · 24/08/2008 07:00

I know a Hildur .... she's Icelandic and a stunner ... so she can be forgiven.

Clary · 25/08/2008 00:11

Hilda was one of those names in a recent story about names that are totally dying out - along with Gertrude and Norman IIRC.

A pal of my mum's is Hilda and even she agrees it's had its day - so in that sense yr pal is making a good choice autumnseeker.

It's not my fave but each to their own - as long as she actually likes it!

I love Agnes BTW - it was (maybe) DS2's name if a girl. Edith is a nice name too; I also like Mabel which I have hardly ever come across. But what do I know? My kids have bizarre and old fashioned names, apparently

BTW I know a 4yo Ruth, only one tho.

twentypence · 25/08/2008 02:13

I have taught over a thousand preschool children. never had a Ruth or a Susannah. Never had a Hilda come to that!

chefswife · 25/08/2008 02:24

hilda? yes, lets hope she's pulling your leg.

juneybean · 25/08/2008 02:30

glad im not the only person who thought of sabrina the teenage witch when i saw this thread!

i do not like hilda

BananaSkin · 25/08/2008 15:30

I think it kind of depends how attractive the child is likely to be. I know that's a truly hideous thing to say, but if she is likely to be beautiful with blonde curls, then maybe she could carry it off. But if there is a chance of her being a bit plain or dumpy, I think it could be dreadful.

What do her parents look like?

NorkyButNice · 25/08/2008 15:34

I quite like Hilda! I had a friend at school who was called Hillie as an abbreviation of her surname - I always thought it was very pretty.

Not that I'd call my own child Hilda, but if I heard someone else use it I'd think it was nice.

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 25/08/2008 18:46

I know a Hilde (pronounced Hilda) who is 25 - but she's belgian. She was mortified when she moved here and got the pity reaction when she introduced herself over and over...
