Dh and I both like Harry. I think it's a good name for a boy and a man. BUT it's my Grandads name and I'm not one for naming children after relatives and even though we would be using it because we like the name, my other Grandad will no doubt view it differently. Also it is quite a popular name.

My other name choice is less traditional...Dexter. I love love love the series (which I know is not a good reason to give it to my son) but am starting to really love the name. On the pos side at least there won't be another 3 in his class but have I just been brain washed by my obsession with a TV programme?

So votes please Harry or Dexter?

Could you name him Henry and call him Harry?

gingerninja · 04/08/2008 20:47

Don't know the programme but I love Dexter.

Collision · 04/08/2008 20:48

Harry

what is the other Grandad's name? Could his be a middle name?

Dexter - not my choice.

hw2004 · 04/08/2008 20:48

what does your DH think of Dexter?

SilkCutMama · 04/08/2008 20:48

Defo Harry - tis a superior name IMO

I wonder why I think that

Dexter is a dog's name imo

ShowOfHands · 04/08/2008 20:52

Dexter is great. Ramone Dexter is a post-apocalyptic gun shark. I do so love him.

Harry's popular atm and I don't love it.

SilkCutMama · 04/08/2008 20:54

scm whispers "Harry, Harry, Harry"

feedmenow · 04/08/2008 20:54

Both are good names, but I'd vote for Dexter.

berolina · 04/08/2008 20:55

Harry

sweetkitty · 04/08/2008 20:55

Harry

Overmydeadbody · 04/08/2008 20:56

Dexter.

Every Tom, Dick and um Harry is called Harry

DorrisMcWhirter · 04/08/2008 20:56

Dexter - like it
HArry -majorly too popular atm, will be known for his entire school life as Harry A or such like. Lovely name if you don't mind this.

SlothyMcFrothy · 04/08/2008 20:58

My HV ds is called Dexter
It is a great name

thisisyesterday · 04/08/2008 20:59

Dexter

noonki · 04/08/2008 21:01

dexter

frazzledoldbag34 · 04/08/2008 21:05

Harry is fab

Dexter just makes me think 'homicidal maniac' - not a good association for a child methinks!

MrsWeasley · 04/08/2008 21:06

Harry

MuffinMclay · 04/08/2008 21:10

Harry (but prefer Henry with the option of calling him Harry)

Hulababy · 04/08/2008 21:24

Harry

Yes, it is popular, but on the other hand I only know of one child called Harry, so doesn't have to ean a life of being known by surname initial at all IME.

MmeLindt · 04/08/2008 21:25

Harry

Gina80 · 04/08/2008 21:30

DS is Harry and it was also my Grandad's name. Some people in the family cooed over the fact we had named Ds after him but I just told them sharply NO, we just liked the name. Once they knew that they didnt dare mention it again

I only know one other Harry and he isn't in the same yr.

LuckySalem · 04/08/2008 21:37

Harry for me but DP likes Dexter so we're not much help!! lol

As for Dexter - the tv series - not being a good reason to give that as a name. We named our daughter after a celebrity because they were born on the same day and the celebrity was nicknamed babygirl which is what DD was for 4 days till we picked a name.

So although we're not much help for you vote. Don't think you can't name it just cos of the TV series.

ScummyMummy · 04/08/2008 21:37

Harry

Eleta · 04/08/2008 21:40

Not keen on Henry and so don't see the point as we would never call him it. Don't want to use other Grandad's name as it is Peter. ( sorry anyone who has a Peter) I don't like the name and if I went down that route, we would be saying we are naming him after Grandparents and MIL would say why not use DH's family names.

DH is mixed on Dexter. He could be talked round but he thinks we only like it because we like the series and thinks we wouldn't have chosen it otherwise.

Dexter isn't homicidal maniac, he kills baddies! Nothging wrong with that

Well OK - I have to admit I've only watched the one episode. But the one I saw was pretty gruesome. And kind of put me off.
Dexter also makes me think slightly 'too cool for school' / American / trying a bit too hard kind of thing.

Where as Harry is just a lovely, strong name (which I would love to use but I have no sons, and also a nephew called Harry so I've no chance!)
Anyway good luck.
