Have you come across many unusual spellings for names? Please share!

I've met a Micheal, a Kloe (Chloe), Tigher (as in big cat), Macks (Max), Sofi, Jorg (parents were not Scandinavian)

And I know a Viktor and a Mikhael - but both have parents from overseas.

Asked mum in question the name of her son as I was filling in a form for her. It was Michael she said and after writing it on the form she then said "No, you've spelt it wrong, it's Mycool".

Gastronaught, I suspect Soma's parents might be Aldous Huxley fans - soma is the universal drug in Brave New World.

'Half a gramme for a half-holiday, a gramme for a week-end, two grammes for a trip to the gorgeous East, three for a dark eternity on the moon..."

I think it (Soma) is originally the 'drink of bliss' created by Sarasvati, Hindu Goddess of art. Maybe it was from that?

I hope so hazyjane as she is a lovely girl.

Soma is the happy drug in 'Brave New World'. Anyone who names her child 'soma' is either a fervent admirer of recreational chemicals, or not that interested in books.

"Love is as good as soma"

I had a cat called Phloughie once. Think about it...

twentypence....agreed on the names don't travel. We quite liked the name Caspar for DS1, but we live in Spanish speaking country where 'Caspa' means 'Dandruff'! So that was a no,no.

lol at Caspar, I had thought that too, "too shed dandruff". Kasper?? Would that float in Spain?

My dad's mum was a featherstone, and when he was a child he remembers they said it feerstun. But now all his uncles' families just say featherstone. To avoid being a hyacinth bouquet I spose!

My name is Siobhan and ive been called shebrion, chevonne ( my pet peeve in view of the fact its pronounced 'shuh - vaughn' and sivaughn - people know how to spell it alot more now than when i was younger but ive noticed that as its grown in popularity its also been ba*tardised in spelling and pronunciation

I also have a Sofia but the only reason she got a different spelling is because thats where her father and i spent our holiday before she was born and i liked the name as well as the connatations ;)

Oh yes and if this lo that im currently carrying is a boy hes getting called mylo - i love the name but my other half reckons its a sweet in France so wants a different spelling and my friend who has young children says milo is a member of the tweenies - haven't a clue as all my DC's are over 11 ( im still not budging on mylo though as i think its got character ) St

There's a girl in my sons nursery called Clay-re (?) Craziness as i am of equal name and ...eh??

I've heard of a Mylo. My name is Sophie and when i see it spelt Sofie i just think thats wrong. I also know 2 Sian's one pronounced sharn and the other si anne. I think the parents of the one pronounce si anne just thought that was how your pronounced Sian. lol

But the name is spelt Milo. It's a good name - but it just isn't spelled Mylo. And anyone called Milo spelled Mylo will have to say "No, it's spelled with a 'y'" every single time he gives anybody his name for his entire life.

It's not on the same scale as calling your child Talluladoesthehulafromhawaii, but it's not big and it's not clever.

But I have to spell my sruname which has an unusual spelling, every time, and it doesn't really bother me. Mylo is in my baby names book, spelt as Mylo and Milo, so surely its the same as some people spelling Claire and some people spelling it Clare.

When my B-I-L went to register his daughter's birth, the registrar was patiently explaining to the previous couple how to spell "Chardonnay"
Agree that you have to be careful distiunguishing mis-spellings from perfectly reasonable alternative (often overseas) spellings. Lucie and Sofie are both fine in France and germany respectively.

I live in France, never heard of "Mylo, the sweet", and agree that the name is "Milo".

Mylo is a Sony gadget.

Lucie is fine in France but you are not French and you don't live in France. Be proud of your own culture and heritage.

I saw a woman the other day that had the name Kyran tattoed on her foot (presumably her son and presumably an alternative spelling to Kieran?)

My aunty is French, married to an Irish man, they have a daughter called Clare - whose culture and heritage should they have been most proud of?

I suppose what I mean is, they could have spelt it Clare the Irish way or Claire the french way, but if they had wanted to spell it Czlare with a silent z then who cares!

FabioFridgeFluffFrenzy · 08/08/2008 10:12

lol at 'because they're trying to be different but havent't the courage' - I think that could be it!

I want to know how many people with unspellable names give their dcs unspellable names too? I'm not talking about your Holly/Hollie or Claire/Clare, but your Inndeeyars and Bethannis and (dear God) Mycools. Big factor in naming dcs for me.
