Have you come across many unusual spellings for names? Please share!

I've met a Micheal, a Kloe (Chloe), Tigher (as in big cat), Macks (Max), Sofi, Jorg (parents were not Scandinavian)

Yes, many. Stand outs include Shevaun (a boy) / Shavonne (a girl) = Siobhan, and Rennaye (Rene).

p.s. Micheal is sometimes an Irish spelling - pronounced 'Mee-hawl'

Effie, when we said what we were calling DD the registrar said 'Is that D A N I E L L A?' so I'm assuming if someones says 'James' they would say 'J A M E S?'
Mind you with Alexander we weren't questioned about the spelling.

There was a check out girl at the supermarket a few years ago who had a name badge on that said

SHUVAWN

I presume her parents couldn't spell Siobhan? (is that the correct spelling??????!!!!)

Truly an awful shame.
Poor girl

Also I've seen for Caitlin:

Kate-Lyn and
Katelynne
Kaytlyn (worse)

Which is just confusing.
Why do people do this?

Also my top name-hate at the mo (a pupil at school) is called Demi-Lee (or maybe its DemiLee or Demileigh not sure). Anyway dreadful.
IMHO.

And I think LeeYam is a good alternative to Liam!

my mother deliberately chose a v odd way of spelling catherine for me. bane of my life - always gets spelt wrong. waste of time (although quite sane compared to a lot of the examples on here...)

Is it Kefferin LOL.

Maybe I should have thought of Leeyam when registering DS That would have been a conversation starter LOL.

Way back in the 1970s the registar pointed out to my mate's dad that her intials would be IRA, so her dad swapped around her first two names. I don't know if registrars can actually veto names, although there was that case of Tallulah Does the Hula in NZ a couple of weeks ago...

My dd is also names Maddison. We chose "dd" as we were going to use the shortening Maddy, but Maddison has stuck. Now we are always correcting people. Although Maddison & Madison are both in top 100

On a recent home visit the nursery teacher asked the parents how to spell their son's name and the answer was "We don't know!"
