Have you come across many unusual spellings for names? Please share!

I've met a Micheal, a Kloe (Chloe), Tigher (as in big cat), Macks (Max), Sofi, Jorg (parents were not Scandinavian)

I know a Renae and a Carmyn. Not that bad compared to some.
Not a bad spelling but I also know of a Senna (girl). I've always wanted to ask her Mum if she's named after the racing driver or the laxative.

I spell my DD name Darcie, as opposed to Darcy or Darcey

cyteen · 04/08/2008 21:30

I've got a friend called Zoie - think it was an accidental misspelling on her mum's part. I really like it though!

i know someone in my DD class at school is called avalisse

yawningmonster · 04/08/2008 23:30

on the theme of parents not knowing how to spell names I can almost guarantee if you asked dh to spell ds second middle name he would balls it up as it is an unusual family name on my side and sounds very like the suburb we happen to live in but is spelt very differently
name = Roullston suburb = Rolleston

For anyone out there contemplating messing with a well known spelling:
DONT DO IT!!!
I have a scottish spelling of my name that is also often lengthened. It has caused me endless grief with people wrongly spelling it and even "correcting" it for official forms by thinking it must be spelt the full "proper" version. We almost had a house move fall through thanks to the mortgage company messing up my name - it really can cause havoc.

girasole · 04/08/2008 23:34

Kian. It's such a lovely Irish name and this spelling just makes it so... chavvy. It's a completely made up spelling, originating with Kian Egan from Westlife, that has become popular. Presumably someone connected with Westlife thought the British public wouldn't be able to get their heads round the hard "C" in Cian . Drives me mad

Also, I have heard Liam pronounced as LIE-am by an American individual.

IdentityFraud · 04/08/2008 23:58

Trinette (Trinity).

2point4kids · 05/08/2008 07:43

Did the Kian spelling really originate with Westlife?
I have seen it so many times I just thought it was an accepted alternative spelling going a long time back like Catherine, Kathryn!

OurHamsterisevil · 05/08/2008 10:55

I think some times that people just don't know how to spell the actual name. ALthough some do it on purpose to make it more interesting Why?

I know of a Shevaun = Siobhan

IdentityFraud · 05/08/2008 12:05

I know a Chevonne...

girasole · 05/08/2008 14:40

2point4kids, yes I believe it did, although I am open to correction on this

Kian Egan was plain old Cian with a C in the days before he joined Westlife. The name Cian is pretty popular in Ireland, I think it's been in the Irish top ten list of boys names for quite a while. There are some Kians in Ireland too of course, but I don't know of any that are around longer than Westlife

gastronaught · 05/08/2008 15:27

my cousins son is a Kian, and he is 24.

girasole · 05/08/2008 16:01

Well in that case I stand corrected, gastronaught . I am curious though... did he always spell it with a K?

girasole · 05/08/2008 16:02

He's not Kian Egan is he???

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 05/08/2008 16:55

Aillee (Hayley)

Olihan · 05/08/2008 17:13

Aillee could also come from the gaelic name Eilidh, which is pronounced like that.

gastronaught · 05/08/2008 18:03

No he is not Kian Egan, I just thought they had spelt it wrong, but apparently (they are from Manchester) there are loads of Kian's of that age floating around.

munchkinmoomanoo · 05/08/2008 18:59

I know a Mea Jorja (Mia Georgia)
Leigham
Leigh-an
Lehann
Emma-leigh

TheSmallClanger · 05/08/2008 21:57

My DH used to work with a Daveid.
I used to know a boy called Kylee.

MouseMate · 06/08/2008 04:50

I know an Emer (Emma) and a Jorja. My Niece is a Siobhan (spelt correctly) but the registrar tried to spell it Shuv.... till we corrrected her.

twentypence · 06/08/2008 05:29

Imagin (Imogen)
