Have you come across many unusual spellings for names? Please share!

I've met a Micheal, a Kloe (Chloe), Tigher (as in big cat), Macks (Max), Sofi, Jorg (parents were not Scandinavian)

WHY can't people pick a common spelling?
I just don't get this.

It's such a pain to have to spell your name out for people. God! how I wish I were called Bog Bogson.

seeker · 06/08/2008 06:37

My mother's neighbour as a dog called Phydough!

Shoshe · 06/08/2008 06:52

merryandmad my Brother is Daryn for exactly the same reason

DancingMamaWithBabes · 06/08/2008 08:10

Met a Sharlotte (Charlotte) and it took me awhile this shows my dumbness that Niamph was not pronounced how you see it and it's Naieve
In the process of checking the spelling came across
www.kabalarians.com/cfm/whatis.cfm
my childrens names are not there, and they have traditional English names!(wondered if there was a UK version of the site.)

CuckooClockWorkShy · 06/08/2008 08:47

It's because they think they want to be different, but actually, they haven't the courage.

I mean, if they picked, eg, Hazel, they wouldn't have to worry that there'd be four hazels. But EmmaLeigh is still Emily. Except, sadly, it could give some snobby folks clues about what kind of background EmmaLeigh came from.

Jillian is the only name re-jig that doesn't make me gag. And I knew a Linzey once who was lovely, so to me, Linzey looks ok, but I bet a lot of people would think Jillian and Linzey, pass the bucket!

flowerfairy · 06/08/2008 08:50

Doesn't matter how you spell it, it still sounds the same. Or do these people go round "hello my name is..., oh by the way you spell it ..." Are they really that precocious!

Not defending them by the way, think these people are just causing their kids problems for the future. Used to work with someone, who 30+ years ago wanted to call her dd Vicky and the registrar said she couldn't call her that she had to call her Victoria. Could do with someone stamping this trend out for these "fashionable" names. We had to spell ds name to registrar and i thought there was only one way to spell it.

CuckooClockWorkShy · 06/08/2008 08:53

I went to school with a Suzin.

nailpolish · 06/08/2008 08:58

my dd2 is Kirstie instead of Kirsty

i just preferred it, that ok with you?

nailpolish · 06/08/2008 08:59

"hse had to cll her victoria"

what a damn cheek! my full name is a shortened name - my parents didnt like the full name but liked the shortened one

i am GLAD they just gave me the shortened one

oopsiedoopsie · 06/08/2008 09:11

on the ward after DD2 was born

arri (harry)
Chorlee (charlie)
Albee
Kuba

fecking bonkers
why give a kid a name it will have to spell to every phone / net / sales / official person for the rest of its life and will get it beaten up in school

CoteDAzur · 06/08/2008 09:45

They think they are bestowing a unique glow on their offspring

Hulababy · 06/08/2008 10:09

I think the ie/y alternatives are a bit different though, as many ie spellings are correct form, just as much as the y form.

DD is Mollie - and the ie form of spelling is definitely a correct spelling of the name.

MimisMama · 06/08/2008 10:24

I haven't met this person, but someone at work saw a driver's licence with the name Daughan (Dawn!) on it - another one where its a simple name that is going to have to be spelled out all the time!

On the other hand, I once worked with a Lyssa (I pronounced her name Liss-a) and was told it was 'Lisa' !!

flowerybeanbag · 06/08/2008 10:26

I used to work with a Lissa as well, I pronounced it Liss-a thinking it was probably a shortening of Melissa and was told it was Lisa.

cyteen · 06/08/2008 10:34

Daughan That is awful! Makes it look like 'dough'.

CuckooClockWorkShy · 06/08/2008 10:36

Kirstie is not in the same loop the loop orbit as Tallooolagh or Daughan!

'ie' is accepted as an ending denoting the 'ee' sound.

I wouldn't mess with most names, but 'ie' instead of y is not in the same category (imo)

Fatbag · 06/08/2008 11:45

Other way round this; but at school there was a girl with the name Sian (correctly spelt) but she pronounced it "Sye anne". Always thought this was odd, esp as my best friend was Sian (pronounced Shaarn - which I thought was correct), but I await correction...

emj23 · 06/08/2008 11:55

There are boys at DS's school called Koreigh and Laeon. I think unusual spellings just condemn the child to a lifetime of having to spell it out for people. Also they'd find it really hard to find door signs and keyrings with their name on, but that's probably not that important

VictorianSqualor · 06/08/2008 11:59

Cuckooclock, the Emma-Leigh I knew was from a very privileged background, was off to private school at 4, her older sister was a boarder in another school and her parents Au Pair used to drop them off and pick them up from nursery (their house was across the road and GORGEOUS).

belcantavinissima · 06/08/2008 13:04

i know someone called krystyna (my age )- she is quite posh but her name sounds chav imo

krang · 06/08/2008 13:17

Should point out that Kian with a K is also a Persian name - my Iranian friend's son is Kian.

And Lucie for Lucy is also a very common spelling that's been around for ages - there was a very famous children's illustrator in Victorian age called Mabel Lucie Attwell.

Flibbertyjibbet · 06/08/2008 14:18

Hmm but Krang thats a middle name.
Not like her first name was May-Belle now is it?

MKG · 06/08/2008 14:58

I know someone who named her twins Luna and Sno.

catrin · 06/08/2008 15:07

A friend of mine, on the maternity ward having had her baby was opposite a women who had just had her 2nd. The name of the first (Charleigh) (girl) was tattooed across her chest. She was discussing with someone how she was going to get the new baby's name tattooed also - Alphee.

My friend was very impressed with their mastery of phonics

mamababa · 06/08/2008 15:14

I have unusually spelled named because my mum thought that the correct spelling of Zoe wasnt right. Mine's not too bad but as a child, I could never have a pen, bookmark, etc where my name was spelled correctly which isnt nice as a child and as an adult you're constantly correcting people.
