See I think differently Malory. I think "poor child" when yet another baby round here gets called Tom or Adam, because they'll probably be one of five in their class. Some people value fitting in, some people like being different - you don't know which your child will be do you? My name is not even that common but it's fairly normal, and I'd love to have been given a mad wacky name. (I wouldn't even mind being called Bear actually. Tiger even better though.)

BibiThree · 06/08/2008 22:42

Personally, I like William Bear.
I think it's fabulous.

snowleopard · 06/08/2008 22:46

Oh no I've just realised why you can't have Bear William!

I love Bear but you will have to think this through carefully

I love it! Not sure i would be brave enough but love it all the same!

Bear Aleaxander sounds lovely and Bear William.

Quattrocento · 06/08/2008 22:57

Rusty! You can call him Rustum - that's a real name too. Piece of inspiration from 400, don't you think?

Hmm you're not making me admire the teaching profession Malory! I thought they were supposed to avoid prejudice and instill confidence

Quattrocento · 06/08/2008 23:02

LOL at shakespeare ref.

EyeballsintheSky · 06/08/2008 23:04

Thumbwitch it was Sebastian Flyte from Brideshead Revisited (Anthony Andrews swoooon )

ChukkyPig · 06/08/2008 23:27

Insy I see you are going to have Bear as a middle name which I think is a good idea.

Tricky though for a first name which goes.

Rupert, Edward and Paddington are obviously out.

Could you maybe do 3 first names, so more usual and family names for the first two and then Bear afterwards. I think you would be doing your son a kindness not to have the Bear too prominent.

BTW my DH wanted Odin or Thor if we had a boy. Luckily we had a girl. You are welcome to those.

Quattro - another valid point well put - thank you

nice when people make helpful suggestions rather than just name calling - so much more constructive

Pooh?

Personally, I agree with Malory, but each to their own, and my mother has informed me that I have given DD1 a cat's name, so who am I to talk?

Boobz · 07/08/2008 16:47

I think these name threads are an absolute hoot! Call him Bear - he'll grow into it, I'm sure. But don't expect anyone on here to like it - it's a very traditional lot going by the choice of names on most of the other threads.

Ref Chukky Pigs's boy's names, my husband wants Agamemnon or Zeus! Am hoping for a girl too...

belcantavinissima · 07/08/2008 16:54

i LOVE the name Bear. honestly. wish i had thought of it for ds2- it would have really suited him

noddyholder · 07/08/2008 17:02

I like it too esp with alexander.Don't feel pressure to toe the line if you love it.

beanieb · 07/08/2008 17:03

Love the name, one of my mindees has it for a nickname

But them I gave my kids unusual names.

If we all gave our kids, the same style of names it would be a very boring world.

roundgirl · 07/08/2008 18:22

There is a little boy called Bear at my local primary school. I think it's cool. My bump is currently called Bear! Anyway i know how you feel, I put my shortlist on this thread and was shot down in flames!

BarcodeZebra · 07/08/2008 22:11

Incy: I was chairing an event with him at the Edinburgh International Book Festival so I did all the questions. He had the collar of his shirt turned up. And boat shoes. I think that says it all.

insywinsyspider · 09/08/2008 20:40

lol barcodezebra - only just managed to get round to checking this thread, think I can get where you are coming from

roundgirl - it started off being shot down in flames but I have had some lovely positive remarks too - I'm still going to be kind and use it as middle name with trad first name which I think will keep everyone happy - luckily I have 2 other ds's and think he would be able to carry name off
