Lee Sane

Would you consider having Bear as the middle name, and call him that, unless he wants his other name. For example Arthur Bear, or Charlie Bear, or John Bear, are all more palatable than Bear Arthur, or Bear John IYSWIM. Ds1 is known by his middle name.

Purplepillow · 01/08/2008 23:05

I actually went to school with a girl who's last name was Bear. Honest that is not a wind up.

gigglewitch · 01/08/2008 23:09

pmsl.

Also thought Teddy, Behind, Hug etc etc

is this for real?

technics · 01/08/2008 23:10

How about Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii

Kbear · 01/08/2008 23:12

K?

Kbear · 01/08/2008 23:14

Don't call him Bear for gawds sake, you are leaving him wide open for ridicule and being a kid is hard enough without a daft name. Sorry to sound harsh!! Creeps off to put Tinky Winky and Po to bed. Nice traditional names those!!!

colacubes · 01/08/2008 23:18

Didnt Anthony Keidis call his son bear?? No dont do it, use it as a family name, just for you but not his name.

insywinsyspider · 02/08/2008 20:38

it was a serious question and thank you for your feedback and to oldgregg, zaphod and colacubes for actually giving a reasonable suggestion - I love the name but do think you're right to use it as a middle name
yes I like Bear Grylls name but didn't like Edward/Rupert etc as a first name

Is this a joke

QuintessentialShadows · 02/08/2008 20:48

Call him Bjørn. Or Bjorn as you say in the UK where you dont have all our letters, ner ner. It means Bear in Norwegian.

ilovemydog · 02/08/2008 20:58

Love Bear Alexander!

I don't understand the 'give him a proper name' but call him something else argument?

MadamePlatypus · 02/08/2008 21:05

I think Orson also means bear.

ButterflyMcQueen · 02/08/2008 21:09

well i think its divine

mavornia · 02/08/2008 21:25

I think its an adorable nickname but I would suggest going for Edward/Orson/Theodore as the first name and then calling him Bear in the family

mamadiva · 02/08/2008 21:26

I think it is a nice name because I like Bear Grylls but can't think of anything that goes with it. A name is your choice don't listen to some folk on here. Erm.

Bear Anthony
Bear Rhys (no could sound to much like Berries LOL)
Just had a suggestion from a friend Bear Matt but would be translated to beer mat.

Bear Alexander is really nice BTW.

paolosgirl · 02/08/2008 21:29

It's cute as a nickname, but not as a first name. It's a lot to ask a child to deal with..

HonoriaGlossop · 02/08/2008 21:36

It's really ridiculous as a name. And mean.

insywinsyspider · 03/08/2008 21:38

those that hate it can rest easy - having conduced interviews I agree first impressions of names can have an impact, Bear will be a middle name which we will use but for offical stuff they'll have a (boring) tradional name....

OP posts:
insywinsyspider · 03/08/2008 21:43

that means I don't need anyone else to tell me its a horrible name

i think the swedish name BÖRJE and the russian name borya also mean bear. how about either of those or would you consider spelling it Ber? That is the yiddish word for bear and again also a real name. I quite like boris too.

thumbwitch · 03/08/2008 23:57

one possible meaning of Arthur is bear so you don't want to be giving him the same name twice. Ditto with Orson.

I think it is a cute middle name but would avoid any well-known Bear names as first ones. Even Aloysius (who had a bear called Aloysius? I know someone did in literature...)

I like Alexander with it; also Hector. Jasper too. Probably not names you would go for, though...

thumbwitch · 03/08/2008 23:58

Boris is a spider's name!!! so you could use that of course...

missmama · 03/08/2008 23:58

Insy My DS has a first name that is not a million miles from Bear, we also choose a sensible middle name.
We did not discuss it with anybody before we anounced that IT was his name. He is now 10 and loves it, he just has to repeat it twice if he meets new people.
If you and DH DP agree on it then go for it. Do not discuss it in real life before you do though

hughjarssss · 04/08/2008 00:02

Fantastic middle name.
That is exactly what a middle name should be IMO .. personal to the family.
