with me

thumbwitch · 04/08/2008 00:33

jura, yes I think it was because that's what I thought when I wrote it but wasn't sure - now you've said it, I guess we're both right.

brimfull · 04/08/2008 00:33

Is Tiger Woods his real name?

nappyaddict · 04/08/2008 01:02

Now Tiger on the other hand i love.

swallowthree · 04/08/2008 18:13

She was on the Double Deckers.

MaryMungo · 04/08/2008 18:20

Why not Albert pronounced the french way? Bear as a nickname is good, as a given name it's a bit of a burden....

belgo · 04/08/2008 18:22

Actually even Anthony Keidis didn't call his son Bear as a first name, the baby's first name is Everly, and Bear as a second name.

AddictedToMyEarplugs · 04/08/2008 18:29

I do think Social Services can take your kids off you for less.

ten10 · 04/08/2008 18:32

Tiger Woods is not his first name
it is Eldrick

Spink · 04/08/2008 18:36

Love it, think in your place I'd probably play a bit safe and go for Bear as a middle name, but then use it, and give your ds the choice if he doesn't like it.
What is it with all "that's not a name" comments? Doesn't really make sense to me as I'm not clear who gets to decide what does and doesn't qualify.. language (and so, what is a name) is constantly developing isn't it??

Insywinsy, got any ideas what you like as the other name?
I know a Jonathon Bear and think he has a great name.

insywinsyspider · 04/08/2008 22:13

missmama - not discussed it with anyone irl as I thought I'd get the reaction I got on here! I still love it as first name but think its important how other people perseve it
Thumbwitch - Arthur is a lovely name but you're right same name twice is not good and I'd like to have Bear in the name and not just as a nickname

insywinsyspider · 04/08/2008 22:14

spink - fav at mo is William Bear... but still after suggestions, like Jonathon btw

I had to interview Bear Grylls once. I'm sorry to report that he was an idiot.

I think it's better as a middle name but I understand where you're coming from.

Incidentally, my mother used to know a therapist called Lionel Tiger once...

insywinsyspider · 05/08/2008 22:34

not seen any of Bear Grylls programmes so have no idea what I think he's like iykwim - wasn't impressed with his idea of flying over everset, thought he was particularly stupid when in interview he was commenting about it being really dangerous/might die... he has a 3yr old son doesn't he?
what did you have to interview him for zebra? (getting side tracked from the name issue and just being nosey!)

oopsacoconut · 06/08/2008 12:02

Bear Grylls has a son called Marmaduke!!!!!

I love the name Bear and wanted it for our bubs but we have found out it's a girl (yippee) so it doesn't fit. DH protested and I said he can have a 'normal' name choice but I WILL get Bear in there and we would call him that! or at least when we have a son I will!

ljblondon · 06/08/2008 12:41

Just chanced upon this - bloody hilarious, you girls are a witty lot. Bottom has got to be the best suggestion
ha ha ha ha

Mamazon · 06/08/2008 12:43

why name a child something that you already feel is so ridiculous he will want an alternative?

insywinsyspider · 06/08/2008 22:19

i don't think its ridiculous but I can appreciate that other people do and think I should be sensitive to that

SquiffyHock · 06/08/2008 22:23

We have an Edward who the family call Bear but no-one else. If he wants to use it more as he grows up then that would be fine but it did just evolve from when he was a baby.

Quattrocento · 06/08/2008 22:32

It's a bit of a statement. I mean to carry off a name like bear, you'd either have to be built like one, startlingly stylish, or spend a lifetime wandering around in checked trousers.

I really hope bear isn't short and bespectacled - not that there is anything wrong with being short and bespectacled, but it just doesn't go with a name like Bear. It's like calling a girl willow - fine when she is slender, not so fine if she is stout.

Other names - Barnaby, Rupert, Knuckle ...

snowleopard · 06/08/2008 22:33

I just want to say I love it Incy (as you're getting so many less positive comments).

From the suggestions mentioned already, I think a name beginning with A sounds good after Bear. Bear Arthur really nice but maybe not if Arthur means bear too!

Also like William. I think it needs more than one syllable. Joseph? Jacob?

We gave DS a very unusual first name and chose a more normal middle name for him to use if he doesn't like it (and we also use a shortened version of the first name). Why? Because we don't think it's ridiculous, because we really like unusual and unique things and we like the meaning of the name. DS might turn out to be like us, and love it, or he might want to fit in, and hate it, so he gets a choice. Best of all worlds IMO.
