I am not saying I don't like these names...but some names get too popular and then they start to smell a bit and seem naff

For girls:

Jade
Ruby? It's the second most popular girl naem nowadays
Aimee
Anything-Mae

For boys:

Rhys
Jayden
Logan

All people seem to be doing here are choosing really popular names as to the ones that will go "off." Nt sure that is how it will work.

For example my name was extremely popular in the 70s, as already mentioned, but it does;t seem to have been ranked as a Tracey/Sharon type name - and TBh even those too names appear to be on the "off" list if aattached to someone from Essex area (well, round here that is how it is seen anyway.)

I think some of the more unusual names are more likely to be the ones that seem really "2000s" type int he future, the ones that want remain popular and keep coming back.

DD's name was mentioned in one of the very first posts, correct selling for DD too. But I still disagree, especially in that spelling. I still think it is a traditional, classic type name that won't date - as it is now with people young and old with the name.

Hulababy · 29/07/2008 20:58

And is Sharon now a rancid name? In ho's opinion? Yes, it is no longer a ppular baby name - like many names fromt hat generation,a nd ye, it has a certain connection with a certain type of girl from Essex, but rancid? No, don't think so. Or certainly not round here anyway. I know aa Sharon and a Sharyn, neither people I consider to have bad names.

Loriycs · 29/07/2008 21:08

Why is everyone being so secretive about their name?? whats the big deal? Dont tell us how popular/rare your name is/was and then not reveal it- its so irritating!

CuckooClockWiseGuy · 29/07/2008 21:17

sharon and tracy only 'became rancid' because of Viz.

I don't think names like Hannah, Emma, Ruby or Molly will become rancid. I know LOADS of Claires and Jennies my age. Particularly Claires. All my friends are Claire W, Claire B, Claire M...... But I have never considered the name Claire to be 'rancid'.

In years to come, our daughters may have Ruby M, Ruby G and Ruby D in their address books, but it doesn't mean they will be 'Vizzed'.

Those names were random victims of of Viz. Could have been Claire and Jenny just as easily.

CuckooClockWiseGuy · 29/07/2008 21:19

Ps, all my Mum's friends are called a version of Mary; Marie, Marion, Miriam, Marianne....

Cyclical. Not Rancid.

Hulababy · 29/07/2008 21:23

Loriycs - my name is Claire (no secret BTW) and it was one of the popular names of the 70s, especially as my middle name was Louise. However, I think I was only ever int he same class as another Claire once in my schooling.

Loriycs · 29/07/2008 21:27

You are right Cuckooclock, it was Viz that made those names 'rancid' wernt they called two fat slags?
i was born late 60's and went to school with lots of sharons and traceys, and waynes and kevins- the male equivalents. I think those names had some association to 'common people'(as so called by pop stars)before viz as i remember joking about sharons and kevins with pink furry dice in their cars and with their names on the windscreen when i was a teenager myself. but definately Viz made them 'rancid'

Loriycs · 29/07/2008 21:30

No it isnt a nice word but alot of words nowdays are not used literally, ie wicked, ive heard my teenager use the word commonly and its not to offend, but i can see how it has the potential. Oh lady thompson youve started something with that word LOL

CuckooClockWiseGuy · 29/07/2008 21:30

Just read this whole thread and it was very interesting, so whilst I can see the potential for offence, I'm glad the OP startd it.

Is there a prize for guessing LadyT's name? I'm going to suggest Dawn . That is quite 70's, I only know one but she hates her name. She gave her daughter a very classic name. BUT, I can see why it would have seemed a beautiful, interesting, fresh name with a lovely meaning in about 1971 or thereabouts.

CuckooClockWiseGuy · 29/07/2008 21:33

PS AGAIN., There is a Jane in my son's creche and somebody slated that name for being boring, but I think it really stands out among the Eloises/Estellas/Isabellas/ Amelias/Sophias.

Loriycs · 29/07/2008 21:36

yes it sounds a hippie era name 60's/70's. Other hippy names Saffron, Saphire, Amber, Jade, Serenity, Topaz, Sage, Fern, Paisley, Jasmine. I only went to school with a Saffron so despite the age of peace and love many of us wernt named as such. Think these names are probably more popular now in fact. I think the most popular name when i was at school was Michelle

ExterminAitch · 29/07/2008 21:38

no, no parent would be so moronic as to go for Dawn Jayne. it sounds ghastly, they would have to be utter plebs.

Lizzylou · 29/07/2008 21:43

I think LadyT is Debbie or Michelle

I am pleased I had 2 DS's (names not mentioned as of yet, phew!) as it appears I have, well, rancid choice in girl's names
Although I fail to see how my choice of middle name should the DS's have been a girl would have been dated, Rose, named after my Great Grandmother who was born in 1890 and died aged 98.

ExterminAitch · 29/07/2008 21:46

oh, she's so a michelle. ma belle.

poocrumbs · 29/07/2008 21:47

ccwg, I'm a '70s Dawn who's given her daughter a classic name. Do you know me?

Loriycs · 29/07/2008 21:49

Rose is a lovely name. It has become very popular as a middle name of late, but Hey. James has always been a popular middle name. most of the boys in my family have james as their middle name. We call it a family name now, but really none of us has any imagination!!! My middle name is Ann as was nearly everyone else in my class at school. Those that didnt have Ann had Jane.

CuckooClockWiseGuy · 29/07/2008 21:53

The Dawn I know puts fresh mint from her garden in to Pimms, and has the most fantaStic coffee machine

Do we know eachother then?1

MsDemeanor · 29/07/2008 21:59

Viz made fun of Sharon and Tracey because hte names were already 'common' - the magazine didn't make them so. I know a Tracey already mortified by her name before then.

MsDemeanor · 29/07/2008 22:01

'My' Tracey used to book her hairdressers appointment in a different name in the early 80s (82-85) because of the stereotypes attached to the name, but Viz only called the Fat Slags Sharon & Tracey in 89

MannyMoeAndJack · 29/07/2008 22:02

This is an amusing thread! I think names are just subject to fashion in the same way as are clothes, such that names become 'locked into' a particular decade. However, names can be country-dependent too.

Most names fall out of fashion/favour eventually, either because they reach saturation point in a given population or they attract negative cultural associations (e.g. Fat Slags!).

LadyT - are you an Angela? Or a Paula?

Nemoandthefishes · 29/07/2008 22:02

sigh
think both DDs names have been mentioned as rancid to be...nothing on DS yet!!
At least I dont particulalry care!!

Loriycs · 29/07/2008 22:05

???? dont particularly care?? why mention???

Loriycs · 29/07/2008 22:10

Prediction: In my grans day names like rose, dorothy, grace and florence were popular - and now theyve made a comeback. Therefore i predict that names of my mums generation- jean, Joan, Pat, Joyce, Barbara will be names that come back in popularity when my grandchildren arrive. I cant imagine having grandkids called Barbara and Brian!!!!!!!!

Shitehawk · 29/07/2008 22:15

I wondered what the smell was round here ... never thought it might be my rancid name that was causing the whiff!
