I am not saying I don't like these names...but some names get too popular and then they start to smell a bit and seem naff

For girls:

Jade
Ruby? It's the second most popular girl naem nowadays
Aimee
Anything-Mae

For boys:

Rhys
Jayden
Logan

Exactly Branflake. I wouldn't say to my sister "I don't like the name DarlingNephew, it's rancid", because that might hurt her feelings. It's specifically aimed at her (not that she would care though, as she has a sense of self and didn't name him to please me!) But idle ruminations on MN...seems a bit much to be getting the hump over. Or perhaps too much MN is making me oh-so-callous...

I am a Hannah, I was named after my greatgrandmothers - One was Hannah Elizabeth, the other Rose Hannah - I like my name - if it ages, then maybe it just means I am aged! lol

Has anyone read Freakonomics? - there's an interesting theory in their that suggests that once nice middle class names do eventually become lower class names becuase the lower classes latch onto them in a kind of social aspiration, so they therefore acquire chavvy connotations - so all your lovely posh names are actually on a downward spiral.

moulesfrites · 29/07/2008 17:48

oops wrong "there" - the shame!

matildax · 29/07/2008 17:53

i tell you what, why dont we just all agree all of the time, my, how bloody interesting that would be!!!! for what its worth, i think people just take offence for the sake of it, on here sometimes, everyone is trying to out do each other all the time.
quite frankly i get the impression, from some threads i have read that a lot of you come across as having wads of cash, live in mansions, are extremely trendy and slim, have a gorgeous faithful rich dh, 2.2 beautiful talented children,(who are so so originally named, that they could never possibly become, shock horror "common") dressed in only the finest, perfectly laundered, clothes, extra large garden, and a muscular gardener!! and the ability to speak 3 languages, and are totally brilliant cooks, and the best friend any girl could have. oh and a exceptionally good shag!!!! am i right?????

LadyThompson · 29/07/2008 17:53

Yes, Moules. Tara might be a bit like that.

And for all those homicidal mothers of Taras who now want to put my head on a pole, I AM NOT SAYING IT'S A HOWWID NAME (quite like it ackcherly)

too true moulesfrites, thats exactly what i think with regard to lovely "middle class" names.

matildax · 29/07/2008 17:56

lol@homiicidal

Loriycs · 29/07/2008 17:58

Dont think Lady Thompson would say that in a cafe in a loud voice, in fact dont think anyone would. Slubber 'take a chill pill' its only internet chat- just as well youve logged off if it affects you that badly.
Anyway lets get back to the original point of this thread. The Sharon and Traceys of tomorrow will probably be the Jade's and Amber's, Tiffany's and Bianca's, and a decade later it'll be more like lily's and Ella's and Freya's and keira's. The fad names like Britney have a limited shelf life.Wonder when the Sharon's and tracey's will return- I predict about 25 years time- so thats my grandkids sorted!!!!!!!

Bronze · 29/07/2008 18:01

Oh no ds2s middle name is Rhys. We chose it as a good welsh name that went with his forename. I can't see that people will look at it in 30 years time and say. oh you're 'so of a generation'

hifi · 29/07/2008 18:05

agree with brittany being a no no.
i think any made up name will be ridiculous, shanika for eg.

LadyThompson · 29/07/2008 18:06

Thank you Loriycs...because that's the point. No one can imagine Lily or Freya sounding as naff as Sharon or Tracy or Donna or my own name, because they seem so pretty NOW. But curiously, some will. In fact, some will seem beyond the pale! All those mummies calling their PFBs Doris or Hilda in the 1920s would have thought they were utterly beautiful. My own Granny, born around this time, was called Alice, which has kept its sheen just as Doris hasn't. I genuinely think this is of interest, but sadly some mothers of Aimees people think I am on a bitchy rampage round Mumsnet to rubbish their child. 'Mazin...

i think experience has taught slubber that these threads almost always hurt people unnecessarily, and that's what she was trying to point out. it is a kick in the stomach to see your child's name on one of these type threads. dd's name isn't mentioned often but was recently cited as boring and i was surprised by how piqued i was.

so i'm with slubber, as it happens. plus, it's class war innit? as per.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/07/2008 18:08

I dont give a flying monkeys what people think of my DD's name, I like it and always will, so doesn't matter what everybody else thinks

Lady T - are you Laura or Emma?

hifi · 29/07/2008 18:08

tegan
mckenzie
CHARDONAY

ExterminAitch · 29/07/2008 18:10

well see that's the thing, elf. whether you like it or not, the idea that because of your choice, your child will be chuckled at as having a rancid name in the future might be an unpleasant feeling for some people. most people, i'd hazard.

LadyThompson · 29/07/2008 18:10

No Elf...Laura and Emma are both nice names!

ExterminAitch - noooo, it's not class war [wailing in frustration emoticon]

Blu · 29/07/2008 18:13

You are mixing up two different phenomenum.

Class, and changing popularity.

Some very popular names will definitley date, but not seem rancid, or be suject to class sneeriness - just seem dated. Like Susan and Janet from the 50s, so 'Emma' and Sophie' and then 'Ruby' and 'Evie' will follow and be replaced with more fashionable revivals of old names.

Meanwhile some names subject to class sneeriness will be replaced by yet more names attracting class sneeriness.

I join Slub in being fed up with class sneeriness over names on MN and everywhere else.

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/07/2008 18:14

All names age. Most people go through a stage of wishing they had a different name.
I have an "aged" name, so I've been there, done that and now past it.
My DD has an "old lady name" - some people pass comment on it. I'm quite happy to respond "good job I'm not interested in your opinion then", including at my mum who frowned at the name I chose.

matildax · 29/07/2008 18:15

elf, my dd1 is called laura!!!! im so very very offended now, and will cry for days, cos someone has mentioned it as being common!! lmao

cremolafoam · 29/07/2008 18:15

Lily rose
Lila rose
anything rose

courtney
chelsea
amber
ruby
already 'goneoff'

Jelliebaby · 29/07/2008 18:16

I love this thread - I find it interesting and fun and thats what the OP intended i'm sure.

I add Courtney and Chloe!!

ElfOnTheTopShelf · 29/07/2008 18:16

Sorry, meant to say, Laura and Emma not awful names (elder sister Laura, I'm Emma) just relating it to the OP's comment on "think 70's name"!

Loriycs · 29/07/2008 18:17

I bet your name is Bella????

matildax · 29/07/2008 18:18

its nothing to do with class, its to do with over popularity of names, thats all. i couldnt give a flying bollock if someone doesnt like my kids names, i do and thats the point, and if in decades to come they are considered naff or dated or common then so be it.
