Which names do you predict will go rancid in a few years, like Sharon and Tracy did?

I am not saying I don't like these names...but some names get too popular and then they start to smell a bit and seem naff

For girls:

Jade
Ruby? It's the second most popular girl naem nowadays
Aimee
Anything-Mae

For boys:

Rhys
Jayden
Logan

There was a girl at my school whose parents had clearly not realised that Karen was/was about to become hugely popular and not very upper middle class when they registered her.

She insisted on pronouncing it Kar - en with the sort of long A southerners use in 'bath'. As we were up North, this did look a tad prententious...

My guess would be that the very popular names of today will look extremely dated very quickly. By the time our children are reproducing, they will think Jack/Harry/Josh/Rhys (esp. spelt Reece) or Ellie/Sophie are a bit over-done.

They are all fine names (apart from Reece - if you can't spell it, leave it alone IMO), just so popular there is bound to be a backlash. No doubt my late great-aunt's mother thought Hilda was a very pretty name, but no-one else has thought so for at least 70 years!

Doh! DS1's name has been mentioned.

princessglitter · 29/07/2008 19:21

Because if you are discussing very poular names and using the word 'rancid' you are clearly going to annoy a huge number of people and it is quite insensitive.

Quattrocento · 29/07/2008 19:21

What, pray, is wrong with Sophie?

UnquietDad · 29/07/2008 19:22

rah-rah-rah

girlsallaround · 29/07/2008 19:23

milly
tilly
talulah

I am just guessing, princess, like everyone else. I think on the basis of distinctive sounding names, which have become very popular. Those're just about the only criteria and as I have said, they don't always work.

Victoria is still in the top 100. As is Elizabeth. I would suggest that monarch names tend to keep their 'value' but worried that some nit will think this means I'm a rampant monarchist . I don't care that monarch names don't seem to turn naff, you see, and I am not saying it is a good or bad thing. I am just saying it SEEMS to be the case.

pgwithnumber3. imo grace is a classic name, and one that will stay beautiful always, just because it is now more popular, does not mean it is not a gorgeous name, the fact you hear it more now, should make you realize that you had the great thought of that name for your dd before they did. thats all!!

hughjarssss · 29/07/2008 19:27

I agree with LL, this is just attention seeking

Raahh · 29/07/2008 19:29

on the theme of royal names, i always wondered, given the fact everyone adored her,why Diana never had a revival at the time.

Quattrocento · 29/07/2008 19:30

Edam, come here AT ONCE. If you think you're hard enough.

JuneBugJen · 29/07/2008 19:30

Think a name becomes questionable when it is associated with someone a bit grim.

When I think of Grace Kelly in 'To Catch a Thief' the name Tracey seems so exotic...

BTW, think I have named my ds a future over-popular name. It's not particularly common now, but have recently heard of 3 others. Just as long as Kerry Katona doesn't get hold of the name I should be ok

JuneBugJen · 29/07/2008 19:31

sorry if I offend any Atomic Kitten ex-group member fans.

Gobbledigook · 29/07/2008 19:32

I think names like ALfie and Archie that are old fashioned and cute now will just sound utterly ridiculous in a few years' time

LadyThompson · 29/07/2008 19:33

Lapin, I'm not going to hang my head in shame at the use of the word 'rancid', which seems to have got up people's hooters. I dashed the thread off in a flippant moment. I thought it was interesting. I'm usually very careful about what I say to people on MN, and like to be gentle. But I thought I was safe with this largely theoretical topic (I mean - baby names! They don't really matter! It is such a personal thing that it's not worth bothering if people think whatever about the ones you have chosen) not to have to couch it in uber-tactful terms. I am sorry if anyone is going to cry themselves to sleep if the name of someone they know comes up on this thread. Clearly, it wasn't the intention. I don't mind if others think the names of my loved ones are risible. Cos it REALLY doesn't signify.

Raahh · 29/07/2008 19:33

i think Grace kelly was also a tracey in High Society...

LadyThompson · 29/07/2008 19:36

Raahh, she was. Because that was a musical remake of The Philadelphia Story with Katharine Hepburn, who played the original Tracy Lord, who was a witty heiress. That was what started me off on this in the first place, I said it on another thread. Tracy was so chic then. And now it's not.

Another thread with snacks, so glad I joined in!

EffiePerine · 29/07/2008 19:42

well we are going with Imperial Germanic for potential DS2's name

I would suggest that shortened names (Alfie, Archie, Freddie, Charlie) will date more than the full names (Alfred, Archibald, Frederick, Charles)

edam · 29/07/2008 19:42

What, Quattro? Nowt wrong with Karen, as such, was just funny that it Was Not Good Enough for my schoolfriend's family despite them choosing it in the first place!

allergictohousework · 29/07/2008 19:43

Also, was Diana Rigg's character in the Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service not Tracy - short for Theresa in fact? V classy at the time. IMO Theresa is still a non-rancid name, though prob. not around much these days.

Lady T is your name Nicola by any chance? Mine is, I was born slap bang in the middle of the 1970s and my parents claim that they thought it was an unusual name when they thought of it ... I hate it now!

JuneBugJen · 29/07/2008 19:43

you are right raahh! sorry, got my movies mixed up.

Quattrocento · 29/07/2008 19:43

Not Karen, Edam. Karen can go the same way as Tracy for all I care. What, pray, is wrong with Sophie?

edam · 29/07/2008 19:44

Oh, sorry, it's Sophie you were on about? Nowt wrong with that, either, just an example of a VERY popular name that the law of swings and roundabouts suggests will be extremely unfashionable in about 10 years.

princessglitter · 29/07/2008 19:44

I really don't think anyone will cry themselves to sleep over this thread, LT.
