Baby # 4 name dilemma

Hello! We are expecting baby number 4 and found out yesterday she's a girl.
In a bit of a dilemma on what to name baby girl...
My children are called George, Grace and Holly. Me and my husband love the name Alice for baby number 4.
However I've recently found out that my younger sister - (who isn't pregnant and probably isn't planning to be for the next few years as she still lives at home with my mum, she does have a boyfriend though who's she's been with for 10 years) also loves the name and is planning on calling her future daughter Alice. Obviously she may never have a daughter could end up with sons.
But am i being selfish if I call our baby girl Alice, my sister even said to me 'you've already got two girls leave the name Alice for me' but that's the only baby girl name that feels right for this baby?! I love how it sounds with Grace and Holly and I am in no way doing it to spite my sister. We also rarely see my sister as she lives 3 hours away from where I now live so would it be so bad if we both had baby girls called Alice?! My Alice would be years older anyway!!
any advice or other name suggestions that fit with my three welcome 🥰💖

Nobody owns a name and your sister is being very unreasonable. Still, I would pick other name. Unless your friendship with your sister ends no matter what name you choose, I think your sister might be resentful to you for choosing the name Alice.

other ideas Holly, Grace &
Lucy
Phoebe
Martha
Louise
Sarah
Celia
Gwen
Megan
Violet
Poppy
Daphne
Juliet
Frances
Elaine/Ellen
Becky/Rebecca
Marina/Marnie

I agree that your sister is being a bit unreasonable, but personally, I would still choose another name. I don’t think you want your daughter’s name to be associated with sourness or bad feelings.

Your children’s names are beautiful! Some other ideas I think might go:

Sophie
Sophia
Elizabeth
May
Rowan
Rowena
Sarah
Charlotte

When I was pregnant with my youngest my single sister told me I couldn’t use the name Grace as it was hers. She’s always had her life all planned out and will definitely end up with a girl and a boy etc 🙄 I really did love the name but my partner vetoed it in the end so I suppose she can have it if she ever does end up with a daughter

NamingNoNames · 31/10/2026 16:47

How much would it bother you if you didn't use it and she named her DD, if and when she has one, something else?

Assuming you said you planned to use it, had you not mentioned the name would you have known she planned to use it?

My aunt used the name planned for me. She did me a favour. Smile

Alice is a name I'd be happy to use.

I loved Xander, friend said please don't I want to use it for personal reasons. we didn't use it. she had a boy. called him something else. never mind. wasn't worth the risk of hurting a friend over a name.

She did your son a favour.

Daffodilsinthespring · 31/10/2026 17:48

Use Alice. She may never have a child. What if you called you baby Mary and then she called her child Jane?

it’s a non problem imo. Would be different if she was pregnant with a girl too.

ISpeakJive · 31/10/2026 17:57

I wouldn’t. There are so many other names out there.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 31/10/2026 18:19

I think Grace and Alice are too similar. How about Alex(andra)?

Mandarinaduck · 31/10/2026 18:20

Oh tricky. Alice goes very well with your other children's names. What if your sister never has a child, or doesn't use it? If you were both pregnant then I would say drop it. But since she is not I would talk to her again and say you would really like to use it. I think she is being unreasonable.

PressedThistle · 31/10/2026 18:21

Your baby girl is on her way, of course she can be Alice! Don't not use a name because of a hypothetical niece.

pinkyredrose · 31/10/2026 18:23

If you want to use it then use it. Your sister can still use it later if she wants.

KatieBee25 · 31/10/2026 18:54

Thanks ladies! I think I will mention it to her again and see what she says... it's so hard when I love the name Alice and no other name feels like the right one!! Or there's not another one me and my husband can agree on! But I've still got a little while to decide on names. I also do really like Olivia and Lucy! Xx

You love it so use it!! Even if your sister uses it in a few years it's no problem having cousins with the same name.

My husband and I absolutely love Alice for a daughter and have wanted to use it for about 10 years. Unfortunately during that time we've found several reasons not to use it. There's an Allison, Alyssa and Alys in the family now and i just met a new friend called Alice which is probably the main reason it's not a good idea! I've also realised it's a bit matchy with my sons name Alfie!

I was still tempted but we've got several others that we do like and will choose from. Olivia, Emma, Chloe, Lottie and Sophie are all possibles so it is definitely possible to find an alternative even when your heart is set on it!

LoudPlumDog · 01/11/2026 16:44

George, Grace, Holly and Alice. Perfect. Alice is my number one name at present. No comment on your sister. I think she’s being selfish.

Suggestions …

George, Grace, Holly and Amelia
George, Grace, Holly and Eliza
George, Grace, Holly and Zara
George, Grace, Holly and Lucy
George, Grace, Holly and Kate
George, Grace, Holly and Anna
