Gender neutral names

dustysidetable · Today 18:45

My husband is insistent on a gender neutral name for our twins, I’m happy with it in principle and there’s so many gender neutral boys names I love but I’m really struggling for girls!. The only one I like is Shelby but he doesn’t like it at all. My favourite girls name is Sylvia but obviously that isn’t gender neutral, I like soft sounding names and not a fan of the nick names like Stevie, Bobby, Riley etc. Any ideas?

If I was insistent on naming my twins of unknown sex before they were born I’d be going for Blair and Blake.

A bit out there but what do people think of Dana? I really like it, but worry about a mix of pronunciations. What’s more common in England, Dar-na or Day-na. I love both pronunciations

I would guess that Dana would be pronounced Dah-na.
That brings back a vague memory; I think there was a girl called "Day-na" (spelled Deyna?) at my primary school.

Why is he insisting on a gender neutral name? Bit silly. Sylvie is so pretty too

But if I had to I’d pick
Robin
Rowan
Wren
Drew
Jude
Darcy
Lauren/Laurie

Or could you do a nickname so Alexandra/Alex or Francesca/Frankie

Lonnie - like Lonnie Donogan the 60s singer? Or is it some horrendous shortening. Horrid, esp as a shortening for Leonie, see also Lainey, Laine for Elaine.

I think I prefer the sound of Day-na it feels more feminine to me! But then I quite like Darna because I like the name Darla!. Although I do have a close family member called Donna which may be too similar

Dale could work for a girl or boy too, similar to Dana

Yes, it isn’t that he wants boys, the boys names that we do like are actually more feminine e.g Sasha and Avery

Well there you go - Sasha and Avery works no matter whether you have 2 boys, 2 girls or one of each.
Still think your DH is being ridiculous. You are the one who has carried them for 9 months and will have to undergo labour or surgery. I'm not saying he shouldn't have a say but he can't impose his bizarre will on you.

OP, just scrap this.

Just choose two names you like and be done with it.

Pp’s have listed just about every gender neutral name there is and you can’t see any of them on your daughter.

Its’s a strange, and too narrow, criteria.

Don't read my posts then.

I suggested Noa and Rowan, and Dominique and Camille.
All gender-neutral.

You are making the thread unpleasant.

Dominique isn't gender neutral. I don't think Camille is either.

That’s not true, there’s been lots of suggestions that I like.

No, I don’t think that it’s ok to give a girl a boys name. You suggested Christina though, which is stupid on a boy, if you’d said Christopher id have said that’s a stupid name for a girl. Not sure why you are struggling with this.

She didn’t though. It was the shortening to “Chris” she was suggesting.

She wasn’t suggesting calling a boy Christina ffs.

you seem to be the only person who can’t see that.

@dustysidetable “My husband is insistent on a gender neutral name for our twins”…..as others have stated on here , I find this insistence really uncomfortable ,what is it about gender neutrality that he feels is necessary for your twins? This is a bit like twin parents who insist on their baby names being rhyming or starting with the same initial .Personally I would leave it to him to come up with suggestions, nobody says you have to decide before your babies are even safely here.

ChoccyHobknob · Today 21:48

Ashley
Robin
Toni/Tony
Frankie
Lindsay
Andi/y
Phil (omena)
Bobby
George/Georgie

There is an irony in liking gender neutral names for boys but not girls - surely the name should suit whatever gender?!

I’m aware, I wish I could understand it myself. I think it’s because I like very feminine names so even the boys choices are feminine but not feminine enough for a girl!

I am going through every single website I can find. I have come across Arliss which I think is pretty but then it’s reminding me of Arse lick😂. I thought that I had my names sorted (gender neutral) but why does it become so difficult when it’s an actual baby you’re naming and not just a theoretical baby.!

Gender neutral or biological sex neutral? Are the children biologically neutral? No thought not. Give the children names that will not be a curse or when they ask at some future date….why was I called …..the reply will at least make them feel that they weren’t a disappointment to dear old ‘gender neutral’ Daddy.

Sowymoon · Today 21:56

Will your husband be secretly disappointed if you have girls?

Talkinpeace · Today 21:57

Please do not lumber your kids with names that will cause them ridicule and stress in 30 years

Trendy "neutral" names will age incredibly badly

Give them simple names and let them choose their own nicknames when they are older

Dominique isn't gender neutral. I don't think Camille is either.

They definitely are. My FIL is Dominique.

OP, what about Andrea or Nicola?
Or if you’re open to adapting the spelling, Eve/Yves?
Kim

And though I’ve never heard it on a boy, I could see Sylvie working for both. Or Lark.

dustysidetable · Today 22:06

Sowymoon · Today 21:58

So why does he want gender neutral names?

It’s a family tradition. The children will have my surname as well as my family middle names, so it’s his way of honouring his family. I don’t mind it at all, I’m just trying to find names I like.

He’s not this awful man that some people are making him out to be.
