Gender neutral names

My husband is insistent on a gender neutral name for our twins, I’m happy with it in principle and there’s so many gender neutral boys names I love but I’m really struggling for girls!. The only one I like is Shelby but he doesn’t like it at all. My favourite girls name is Sylvia but obviously that isn’t gender neutral, I like soft sounding names and not a fan of the nick names like Stevie, Bobby, Riley etc. Any ideas?

you know you don't have to agree to a gender neutral name (or indeed any name) if you don't want to?

@dustysidetable , would your DH want gender neutral names if they were two boys?

Yes, it isn’t that he wants boys, the boys names that we do like are actually more feminine e.g Sasha and Avery

I think giving a boy an obvious girls name is stupid, pretty simple really. Also opens up the kid to a lifetime of mockery. Why not give a boy a boys name with neutral abbreviation?

That's why I was suggesting names like Alex and Chris, with longer BC names.

It seems people think it's ok to give a girl a boy's name but not the other way round.

honeylulu · Today 20:37

With a lot of names the name/female versions have a different spelling or variation. Is that acceptable?
Lesley/Leslie
Alexander/Alexandra (both could be Alex or Sandy)
Maxim/Maxine (Max)
George/Georgia
Peter/Peta
Lee/Leigh
Anthony/Antonia (Tony/Toni)

Ashley
Jordan
Eden
Kit

To be honest though if my husband told me he "insisted" on our twins having a certain type of name when I was bearing and birthing them he would get told to fuck off.

No, I don’t think that it’s ok to give a girl a boys name. You suggested Christina though, which is stupid on a boy, if you’d said Christopher id have said that’s a stupid name for a girl. Not sure why you are struggling with this.

No she didn't. It was obvious to me from context that those were being suggested as girls names, with the implicit statement being give the boy's equivalent for a boy, with both shortening to the same thing.

I'm not struggling with it at all but I'm finding your posts trying. I'm not suggesting that anyone name a boy Christina.

Why are you struggling with it?

You suggested the name Christina and Patricia, which aren’t gender neutral…. OP doesn’t know if she’s having girls or boys. Considering you aren’t suggesting names that she’s even asked for I'm finding yours a bit trying too.

TeenToTwenties · Today 20:53

@ToKittyornottoKitty you have the wrong end of the stick. I suggest you quit arguing.

ladygindiva · Today 20:54

If you like Sylvia/ Sylvie what about Sylvan ? I know a female one but it has a unisex feel, I'm pretty sure it's a boy's name in France. And yeah, a gender neutral name works for both and there's no such thing as a gender neutral name that doesn't work for girls ....

Don't read my posts then.

I suggested Noa and Rowan, and Dominique and Camille.
All gender-neutral.

You are making the thread unpleasant.

I don’t. OP asked for gender neutral names, names specifically aimed at one sex aren’t gender neutral. HTH.

Back in the 1970s, I regularly came across a family with 2 children, a boy and a girl. Being the 70s, both had long hair. Their names were Tarn and Myer, and I never did know which was which, or which was the boy and which the girl! I don't think that either name has become popular, so help yourself, OP.

Don’t reply to my posts then 🤷‍♀️ I gave an opinion about the girls names you suggested and you keep replying and disagreeing, if you don’t want to then don’t.

A bit out there but what do people think of Dana? I really like it, but worry about a mix of pronunciations. What’s more common in England, Dar-na or Day-na. I love both pronunciations

@dustysidetable , they're your babies too. You carried them and gave birth to them. If you like Sylvia, maybe he could choose the other name.

I like it, not sure how it’s pronounced, maybe it differs regionally? I’d probably go for day-na

I think I prefer the sound of Day-na it feels more feminine to me! But then I quite like Darna because I like the name Darla!. Although I do have a close family member called Donna which may be too similar

No such thing as a gender neutral name. Only boy’s names that are used for girls and people immediatly stop using for boys! Give her a girl’s name. Being a girl is a good thing!

As someone with a gender-neutral name, in my 50s, I can promise you people haven’t ever stopped using my name for boys as well as girls! It’s been around for both boys and girls for years.

I used to date a man, older than me, who also had a gender-neutral name, which is also definitely still used for both boys and girls. He had a female housemate with the same name as him for a couple of years.

I think with it being twins people would notice the similarity to Donna less, and they’d be putting the 2 twins names together. Although I don’t think it’s too close to Donna anyway. Dana and Ellis are nice
