Nickname names?

Curious how people feel - if you have a name that doesn’t have a nickname (so you just go by your given name), do you like it?

If you have a name with one or multiple nicknames, do you like the options?

I have a popular name with multiple nicknames and I have always gone by one of the nicknames. I don’t mind having the options but I normally correct when people see my name written as the full version.

Wondering opinions!

I have name that has two obvious nicknames, although if I really though about it it could have more 'strechy' nicknames. One of obvious nicknames I don't like, another is my mother nickname. When I was child, cca 9y, I wanted to have a nickname, but couldn't think of any beyond two most obvious and I hated that, but I didn't mind my full name and I gone by my full name anyways.

I do like some 'nicknames' for my names on my list, but I would never pick name I don't like just to use nicknames I like. I do like some nicknames where I'm still searching for full name, but I don't like any full names for this nickname, and I don't think this nickname can work as full name. So, probably would use name on my list that I already love and use nickname as a term of endearment.

I plan to call my kids full names because why use full name anyways if you use nicknames all the times, but obviously many nicknames are lovely and I like when name has multiple nicknames and it's already nice name as full name.

My name doesn’t shorten naturally so people occasionally force one, which now I’m older sounds silly. My 2 dc both have names that are easily shortened, one is, one isn’t.

Spaniels4Eva · 05/10/2026 11:23

My 1st two have names that are easily shortened but didn't like how people kept making different nicknames for them - so for our 3rd, she's got a 5 syllable name that doesn't shorten to anything!

My own name can't be shortened thankfully, and I'm very glad about that.

CurlewKate · 05/10/2026 11:24

My DS has a name with multiple shortenings. He uses the full version himself, rejecting early the shortening I was hoping for, but really likes being different names for different parts of his life, and it does seem to happen naturally.

Membrill0 · 05/10/2026 11:25

My name doesn’t easily lend itself to a nickname. Someone once tried it but I didn’t like it. It can be spelled differently. Fortunately the parent who registered my birth chose the spelling I prefer though very few, even though it’s not complicated, write it correctly. It’s just something I overlook now.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 05/10/2026 11:29

My name is one syllable and doesn’t have any kind of nickname. I do often get called by its initial though ‘D’, which I don’t mind, but that’s only ever by very close friends.

HughManity · 05/10/2026 12:22

Are you asking because you are looking for a name for a baby @john098 ?
You don't seem to have posted on MN before.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 05/10/2026 16:33

No I absolutely hate the fact that I don’t have any other choice. I never forgave my mum for calling me Clare. However I’ve always loved the name Faye which gives you same issues. I think it’s also because I’m from Liverpool and it’s mostly said as Cliiiiirrrre which sounds awful.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/10/2026 17:13

I grew up with a name with a few nicknames, but the most obvious one was also a popular boys' name, which was confusing. It was bad enough that people often pronounced my name in the same way as the boys' version.

I later changed it to something short, easy to spell, and definitely female! It can be a nickname for many longer names, but I like its simplicity, and that it doesn't automatically get shortened to anything else (e.g. people assuming that I am Liz rather than Elizabeth, or Vicky if I preferred Victoria). It just occasionally gets mistaken for something that sounds similar.

DramaAlpaca · 05/10/2026 17:20

My name is short and doesn't lend itself to diminutives (a shortening of a first name is called a diminutive, a nickname is a different thing) and yes, I like it. Short, easy to spell, classic and can't be messed around with.

DH also has a short name, and so do all our DC. I don't mind longer names, but only as middles so they can't be shortened to something I might not like.

cartagenagina · 05/10/2026 17:21

My name is a shortened version of a longer name. So imagine my name is Nicky but not Nicola.

I really like it and even answer to “Nicola” although it’s not my name.

JaneJaneAnne · 05/10/2026 17:29

My name has a couple of obvious diminutives, and my family use my favourite occasionally.

Other than that only friends who have known me since my school days really use my nickname.

People who have known me as an adult only call me by my full name.

I really like my name, it’s unusual, pretty and has a great meaning.

Freshrain · 05/10/2026 17:38

This.
A nickname is what you get called by your mates because of something you once did, or said, or your family again because of something you used to do or sometimes the way you mispronounced something when learning to talk.

Butterflybluebell · 05/10/2026 20:44

My name has obvious nicknames but I only ever really get called my full name

LivingTheDreamish · 06/10/2026 02:18

My name has several common diminutives that I don't use. I don't mind if people use them in talking to me but most people appear to take my lead and use my full name. I think it's one of those things it is best to be unbothered about. I suppose it's different if you have strong feelings about liking/disliking certain versions of your name but I don't.

Daffodilsinthespring · 06/10/2026 21:55

Absolutely hate it. I insisted that my child had a name that could be shortened as mine can’t.

Jessbow · 06/10/2026 22:26

My Grandaughters nick names bear no resemblence to her given name at all.

dreamingofgoodhair · 06/10/2026 23:03

Nicknames evolve around a person’s personality/ job/ looks/ hobbies etc.
Shortening of names eg Alex for Alexandra are diminutives.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 07/10/2026 00:15

My name cannot be shortened and I love that it can’t! I hate the way people at work shorten people’s names without asking. Why do they do it? Just had a new person start in our team who put a few people straight about NOT wanting their name shortened. I thought they were quite right to state they want their full name only.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 07/10/2026 12:06

My name has a natural abbreviation, but it’s quite a short name, and that’s what is pretty much always used. The abbreviation is also a natural abbreviation of a similar but longer name, and is mostly used for that.

Imoldenoughtorememberbagpuss · 08/10/2026 17:00

I have only ever gone by the shortened version of my name, to the point I wonder why parents didn't just name me the short version.
I didn't even know I had an official longer name until I started school and the teacher called it out. I didn't answer as I didn't realise it was me.

Summerlovingtheraspberries · 10/10/2026 06:01

I use both my full name and the obvious nickname.
Family always call me by the full version.
I sometimes wish I had used the less common nickname, but that would mean both dh and I have virtually the same name as he uses the short version of his name.
My DCs have long names. I never shorten their names.

Summerlovingtheraspberries · 10/10/2026 06:06

Just read the thread. I mean diminutives of our names.

My grandmas’s sisters all had nicknames. They weren’t really diminutives as you would not know their real name from the name they got called.
This was when children were given a ‘proper’ name though. Strangely my grandma was the only one whose name was never altered. She was named after her mother.

TruffleSlinky · 10/10/2026 06:20

Everyone calls me by my nickname. People are surprised if they find out it's not my full name. I still think it's good to have the full name on the birth certificate to give the child options.
