Would you discount a name for being too popular, even if you really loved it and have loved it for years?

I wanted to use the name Oscar from being 14 or 15. At the time (turn of the millennium), Oscar was only just beginning its comeback in UMC circles and was still considered old-fashioned/posh by most people I knew.

By the time I fell pregnant with DS, it was top 10 and still rising in popularity, and I’d taught multiple Oscars over the past few years. So no, I didn’t name him Oscar, even though I still love the name.

I can tell people apart from one another even if they share a name.

Probably by adding some kind of additional information about them!

At the office we have Small Sarah, Marketing Sarah, Glasses Sarah etc.

Personally I’d rather have a name that isn’t shared by lots of others. Perhaps other people don’t mind?

My eldest has a very uncommon first name, his best friend in his class has the same name. They are known as first name, last name initial and they love it. My youngest has a very common popular name that has been in used for centuries, he is the only one in the school and we don’t know any other children with his name.

Just go with the name you love ❤️

No, by addressing them directly. If I was referring to them when speaking to someone else, I'd say 'Sue Jackson' or 'Sue in R&D' or whatever.

I don't know whether I'd prefer to be one of four Sues or the only Viviana or whatever. When I give a false name, I pick a name that was very popular in my age group.

(False name because I'm too traceable otherwise. Barista in Starbucks/Random man in pub does not need to know my real name)

It's depends if it's a popular classic or popular trendy.

Thomas, Christopher, Isabelle, Elizabeth type names, it wouldnt sway me.

More modern names like Jayden, Kai, or the never ending Something-may/Mae/mai. I wouldnt
