Would you discount a name for being too popular, even if you really loved it and have loved it for years?

No. All my children have names that were top 10-20 when they were born and are still very popular. The youngest in particular. They are all very unique, independent kids, so sharing a name with a classmate is really no issue at all. I love that there are no issues pronouncing or spelling their names, and that they are good, strong, classic names.

No I would use it.
Who knows what will be popular in years to come.
I would never choose a name based on its uniqueness. Lots of so called unique names become popular.

I'd use it as the middle name I think, although I've never had kids so haven't been in that position and my favourite names tend towards the weird and wonderful.

Yes. I would avoid a popular name, though obviously there’s nothing wrong with picking one that a lot of others have chosen.

Am fed up with own name which was in the top 10 for like a decade when I was born. It dates me hugely and I wish I had a classically timeless name - something beautiful that could be the name of an 80 year old or an 8 year old. But that’s Holy Grail territory.
Gave all our boys names that are classic and spelt the usual way but they are ones that nobody else in their year has, except for ONE other kid. Years later it still feels like a good decision.

Unique means the only one. It doesn't mean rare or different. The actual definition of unique is the only one of its kind.
So you can't have a truly unique name.

Yep. Some names are popular because they are trendy for the time. These will date badly.

Some names are popular because they're just strong names and have been in use for decades

But let's take Cleo, Edie, Romy, etc as an example. Not in the top 100, but very trendy at the moment if you look on social media.(I love all these names BTW) but they all follow a certain vibe. So imo, blend into one in a sense.

So you can't have a truly unique name.
You can make one up but someone else might use it.

When I was in a rowing team at uni, my crew (8 women) included Cat, Kate, Katie X2, Kathy and Catherine. I'm one of the non-Katherine names, and my middle name is the same as the other one's first name!

No I would use it. My name was extremely popular. There were 12 of us in my year at secondary school.

No, not at all, there have always been at least two of me in classes at school, workplaces etc and it doesn't bother me at all in fact I quite like it. I seem to have popular initials too. I'd far rather have a popular name than one everyone asks how to spell, or asks why you chose it, or has generally just never heard before.
