Thoughts on Sabine for a girl? DH likes it and has mentioned it more than once, but it's a bit of an odd name to me really. I've never known one ever. It's also slightly awkward to say. I can't really imagine myself introducing my daughter as this name, shouting it when it's time to eat, etc.

To me, it's a French name and I sort of say it in French in my head! Is it that for you? How about something like Sabrina or Serena?

MyArtfulGreySloth · 21/08/2026 18:11

I’m not keen. I can imagine years of being nicknamed “bean” at school.

Offtothesea · 21/08/2026 18:14

I knew one Sabine and she was German, really harsh personality so I only ever associate the name with her now! Could he be swayed by Serene? Sienna or Simone?

Calliopespa · 21/08/2026 19:54

Rape of the Sabine Women.

No.

poolshoes · 21/08/2026 19:55

I like it & know of 2

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 21/08/2026 19:58

Not keen, sorry.
As a PP said, how about something similar like Sabrina, Selina, Serena, Shaleen?
Or Nadine?

Shloopie · 21/08/2026 19:59

I pronounce Sabine in Rape of the Sabine as say-bine

I generally pronounce the given name Sabine as Suh-beena

Pieceofpurplesky · 21/08/2026 20:01

I love Sabine and Sabine Wren is one of the best female Star Wars characters!

I love Sabine and Sabine Wren is one of the best female Star Wars characters!

That's probably where DH has got it from!

I think Serena is a good substitute OP?

BunkBedsArePeopleShelves · 21/08/2026 20:06

I love Sabina (my sister's name)

bgi · 21/08/2026 20:10

BunkBedsArePeopleShelves · 21/08/2026 20:06

I love Sabina (my sister's name)

That's a good suggestion.

Favouritefruits · 21/08/2026 20:11

Ooh it’s gorgeous! I love the name!

user1492757084 · 22/08/2026 08:16

Sabine is smart and grown up for a girl.

Do you like Sibyl?

babyproblems · 22/08/2026 08:22

Live in France and know of three Sabines who are in their 30s. pp is correct that it is French!
its quite pretty, personally I don’t love it

unabashedopossum · 22/08/2026 08:29

It’s also a German given name. In Germany it’s pronounced zah-been-uh.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 22/08/2026 08:30

Sabine was my French exchange partner. I think it's a nice enough name. I prefer Selina, if you're not sold on Sabine and want suggestions of something similar - it seems a bit more elegant somehow.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/08/2026 08:31

I like it but then I know a lot of French people. It sounds lovely in a French accent - have you tried saying it in your local accent though OP?

EvelynBeatrice · 22/08/2026 08:32

Sorry I do associate it with rape too.

Sabrina instead?

ThatshallotBaby · 22/08/2026 08:33

I really like it. It’s gentle but strong imho. Good choice.

thesnailandthewhale · 22/08/2026 08:37

Sounds like an airline to me, sorry 🫤

Ansells · 22/08/2026 08:42

I think it’s a lovely name and know two - one French and one Swiss.

Never heard of the Rape of Sabine before.

SupaStah · 22/08/2026 08:44

Honestly not a fan, love Sabrina though.
Sabine just reminds me of the way mr bean says it in one of his movies, or Ribena.

BunkBedsArePeopleShelves · 22/08/2026 08:45

I thought Mr bean never spoke

Sakura7 · 22/08/2026 08:50

I like it. Associate it with the tennis player Sabine Lisicki.

Sabina is the name of the former Irish president's wife.
