Sabine

Thoughts on Sabine for a girl? DH likes it and has mentioned it more than once, but it's a bit of an odd name to me really. I've never known one ever. It's also slightly awkward to say. I can't really imagine myself introducing my daughter as this name, shouting it when it's time to eat, etc.

I prefer Sabina. Like PP Sabine written down just makes me think of the Rape of the Sabine Women even though it's pronounced very differently.

But there are lots of similar prettier names: Serena, Serafina, Sabrina.

It’s funny how the arts can have such strong connotations — for me it’s not the painting / Roman history but the Ann Patchett novel the Magician’s Assistant!
equally have met plenty of French/german/swiss over the years but without any connections to those countries it seems an unusual choice

Like PPs, I've come across a German Sabine pronounced "Sah-been-uh" and rather liked the name.
She was a lovely person and extremely attractive in personality and looks so gave it positive associations for me.
I'm aware of "The Rape of the Sabine Women" painting but, because it's pronounced differently, it didn't occur to me to conflate the two.

Sabine was the name of the female German racing driver in ‘Top Gear’.

What about Sabrina? Sabrina was the cool
one in ‘Charlie’s Angels’ or for the younger folk, a teenage witch.

I live in Denmark and have met a few lovely Sabines. Are you pronouncing it Sa-been-uh?

Absolutely love it, one of my favourites. Would pronounce it as they do in Germany: Za-been-eh.

I think it’s pretty but I think Sabrina is even nicer, and Selene is lovely as an alternative.

I only know one, who is German (Sa-been-uh). The association for me is also very strongly with the rape of the Sabine women and I'm surprised it's still relatively common in some countries.

It reminds me of Sabine Schmitz, Queen of the Nürburgring, who was awesome.

I really like it. All those I have met have been German or Austrian I think, with the e at the end pronounced.

The Sabine women were a bloody resilient lot and you can't blame them for what happened!
Anyway it's a different pronunciation. I quite like it
