Terry?

Namechange because it’s possibly quite outing.

Is Terry due a revival as a boys name? It’s my son’s name and we haven’t met another under the age of about 50! He was named after his grandad, at the time I hated it but it’s grown on me, so under the guise of a name change I wondered what honest opinions are of the name.

I first think of Terry McGinnis, from Batman Beyond. So for that reason, I like it. And I like Tear-bear as a nickname.

But I'd have probably gone for Terence with Terry as a diminutive. More options!

It’s a lovely sound, but people will assume he’s an elderly cockney wide boy.

Its similar to Keith, which I think has a lovely sound and meaning, but isn’t really useable for a little boy these days.

That song is already on a loop in my mind!

I think of Terence Trent D'Arby and he's a fine specimen ( his stage name though).
I think it's lovely he's named after his grandad.
I prefer it to the ever popular Teddy actually.

My brother is Terry (terrance) and I think it’s a lovely name! He was named after the song about riding his motorbike into the night….

I only know girls & women called Terry. Probably short for Teresa.

So Terry is a name on its own, not just a nick-name for Terence?

When you just consider the sound of the name it actually sounds nice. Similar to Teddy which is very popular.

But... it's very 80 year old man name. Very popular in that age group. It may come back or it may not.

I really don’t think a revival is likely OP! I would put Terry in the same bracket as Wayne, Darryl, Barry etc.

To answer a question, no he’s not Terence on the BC just Terry.

And for the person who suggested Tezza as a nickname, one of his teaching assistants called him that, and I didn’t mind.

The responses have been more open to the name than we received in real life, most people express a polite surprise that clearly says “oh my god you called him what!”.

I had an uncle Terry, I can't imagine it on a baby or a young child. I really don't think it's due a revival, much prefer it for a girl.

My Dad was a Terence, and usually called Terry or Tel. We have four other Terry's in the immediate family, ages 70s, 2 x 60s, one 20's. It was also going to be my name but a last minute change due to thinking one Terry too many lol. I love it and it has Latin roots. I think names fit the person and if you love them, the name is loved too. I laughingly told a friend to test out her potential name by asking her teacher friend the names on her registers, she then realised how common her random choice was. Names are marmite choices and long may they remain so.

I don't like it, for me it's a bit phoenix nights.
But tastes change, maybe there will be lots of like Terry's running around soon.

It’s funny that for anyone over 40ish, Terry has such specific mental associations that it fell so completely out of fashion to the point where anyone under 20 must have ZERO preconceptions - and so, I guess, if they like the sound of it, it could come back in a decade or two. Ditto Sharon, Tracey, Gary, etc.

Then there’s that crop of very 70s Scottish boys names - Craig, Malcolm, Duncan, Scott, Keith - are they due a revival, now they’re all grandads and not heart throbs with one pierced ear in Jackie magazine photo love stories?

To me it's a very mid-century kind of name. It's dated now but maybe it will come back in 40 years. Names typically have a 100 year popularity cycle.

Wasn't it the name of that pervy American photographer?.. Terry Richardson. I've accidentally seen some weird shit he's been up to so his name stuck. He had "T-bone" tattooed above his bits (wt fuck do I remember this).

On the other hand, Terry Wogan. Lovely guy.

Edited: I can see you said he is Terry. I honestly thing Terence would have been better. Always thought its weird to give your child only one option of a name.

I think it's fine, a diminutive of Terrance/Terrence.
It's a little bit unusual for these days without being completely unheard-of.

@BewareOfTheFakes I love it OP. It's a fine name. There won't be 500 others in the same school and he won't be defined by an era or a celebrity fad. I personally would've chosen Terence so he has a choice in later life but otherwise all good.
