The thread about Ezra got me thinking about other Old Testament boys names. What do you think of these ones and do you think any of them could become the next Noah or Isaac?

Is Simeon an old testament name?

Yes, there are several Simeons in the Old and New Testaments. I rather like the name but I suspect it would often be misread or misheard as Simon.

Yes it is. Simeon was one of Joseph’s brothers. There is also a Simeon in the NT.

I like Elisha for a second born - as Elisha was the prophet who came directly after the prophet ElIjah and Elisha got a double portion of the Holy Spirit.

I like how you have to know that Elisha came second to know why you would name a second son after him.

Jonathan and David are great names. I prefer Jonathan to John, personally. James is possibly my favourite boys' name and also features in the Bible.

I really like Micah. I had it on my list along with Elijah for ds2 but exdp didn't like either unfortunately.

I love those types of names and a lot of them were on my list. Another name I like is Zephaniah.

Caleb has been popular around me for ages and is is top 100 nationally (and I'm pretty sure it has been for at least the last 10 years). So it might not be 'Noah' level of popular, but it's definitely far more popular than most of the names on your list. I'd put it on a par with Reuben, Zachary and even Isaac, the other name you mentioned. I know far more boys called Caleb than I do Isaac, although I realise that's just anecdotal and the stats don't necessarily reflect that.

Raphael is up and coming, but it definitely doesn't scream obviously Biblical to me. I had no idea it was.

Asher is another up and coming name which I hear sporadically, so doesn't feel that unusual.

Seth and had a bit of a rise 10-15 years ago, but seems to have fallen away again.

I hear Isaiah, Micah and Solomon occasionally around me, usually boys of African heritage.

Judah could be an alternative to Jude I guess, and Zachariah an alternative to Zachary. The latter already seems quite popular, spelt Zakariya, among Muslim families. I believe it's the name of a prophet. It's hovering just outside the top 100.

Levi is my prediction for a rise in the coming years.

Jesse is one that has risen a lot in recent years. It feels on a par with Ezra.

Aaron and Nathan feel quite 90s, but could come back again. Although maybe Nathaniel/Nate suit modern trends better.

Are Catholics and Orthodox Christians not Christians then? The Book of Tobit is not part of the Protestant biblical canon but this doesn't mean it's not in the "Christian" Bible.

I consider the books as being standalone.

The Archangel Raphael is not mentioned by name in the standard Old Testament (the Hebrew Bible or Protestant Bibles). He does, however appear in the Book of Tobit which is a deuterocanonical/apocryphal book included in the Catholic and Orthodox canons.

I always thought I would have a Micah but didn't want an alliterative baby name and my married surname begins with an M. I have a DS called Asher who is now an adult and has always loved his name, which remains pretty unusual.

Joseph will always be my favourite boys name. Luckily I got to name my first born Joseph

I really wanted to name my second son Elisha, but my heathen DH vetoed it. We settled for Asher as we were so happy 😂

I love Micah, but decided to go with Malachi and his surname starts with M but it is quite nice 😊

Raphael is an archangel and is mentioned in the Book of Tobit. This book is not included in protestant bibkes, but is included in RC and Orthodox bibles.

It is considered apocryphal by protestants.

What is a standard old testament is also up for debate ever since the Reformation.

I think alliteration can work really well but I didn't think it worked with Micah and my surname. Malachi is lovely.
