The thread about Ezra got me thinking about other Old Testament boys names. What do you think of these ones and do you think any of them could become the next Noah or Isaac?

Isaiah
Solomon
Gideon
Josiah
Asher
Micah
Abraham
Caleb
Ezekiel (Zeke for short?)
Phineas
Abel
Boaz
Thaddeus
Malachi
Asa
Judah
Zachariah
Amos
Zebediah
Silas
Raphael
Seth

Any more suggestions? Thanks!

I already know children called Caleb, Judah, Abraham & Isaiah.

I also like Solomon, Asher, Malachi, Amos, Silas & Seth.

There's also:
Adam
Isaac
Moses
Abner
Joel
Levi
Jared
Reuben
Eli

I think Caleb has been fairly common for a while, it's certainly not rare. I know a few teenage Seths and one adult one. It seems unlikely they would suddenly spike now to be top 10 names but who knows. I know a few young Abels and Ashers. I think they do have potential to keep growing in popularity as they feel like 'new' names (although obviously they're very old!)

I reckon Asher, Micah and Silas are on the way up.

Omg this genuinely looks like my baby name list.

Gideon - dv vetoed else twin one would be called this.
Ezekiel (Zeke for short?) - have one and he's a Zeke or Zekiel
Thaddeus - wanted this along with Balthazar but I lacked the guts.
Malachi - my first choice for DS 1
ZACHARIAH - my alt choice for the one who ended up Zeke
Zebediah - on my list
Raphael - on my list along with Gabriel

Reuben is also great.
Love Nehamiah and Obidiah and Zephaniah

Is Raphael a Bible name? I can't remember coming across this name in the Old Testament . . .

ginasevern · 06/08/2026 16:03

Caleb made it out some years ago, likewise Josiah. And someone on Mumsnet the other day was considering Abel for her son. I think Malachi is also gaining traction. Did Adam ever really drop off the radar? If it has it's a shame because it's a good, solid name.

Not mentioned in the Bible.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 06/08/2026 19:48

Of those listed I know a Micah, Solomon, Asher, Asa, Silas and Seth. Seth seems pretty common actually, and I reckon Micah might be getting more popular. I really like Amos.

LoserWinner · 06/08/2026 20:36

Silas is New Testament.

Huskysledging · 06/08/2026 20:40

I have a Judah named after his great grandfather. He absolutely adores and loves his name. He has never (by his choice) shortened it. His friends love it and he is a highly popular lad. His teachers and friends love his name.

He's one of the archangels, I think. Fabulous name.
Most of the more common OT names are great, IMO. Just don't go for Lucifer or Cain :)

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 06/08/2026 20:44

According to Wikipedia, Raphael is first recorded in 1350 BC and appears in the Book of Tobit, which is not in the Christian version of the Old Testament. Raphael was an archangel, as others have said, along with Michael, Gabriel and Uriel. I can't see Uriel becoming popular because of the similarity to urine.

I know an Amos who is under 10. I like it. Probably not going to become the next Noah though.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 06/08/2026 21:53

I like Asher and Asa.
with Amos I always think of the knock knock joke

knock knock
who’s there?
Amos
Amos who?
A mosquito 🦟

Jediah (Jed)

FindingMeno · 06/08/2026 22:05

BTW, fantastic names, op!

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/08/2026 22:08

I went to school with a kid called Eliezer (Ellie-ay-zer). I’ve never met another one, but I thought it was a great name.

Giraffehaver · 06/08/2026 22:45

You've missed my favourite Lemuel

LilyLemonade · 06/08/2026 23:28

Love some of these.
What about Simeon, Saul, Jesse, Eli?

PrincessASDaisy · 06/08/2026 23:35

Jericho

Variationofnormal · 06/08/2026 23:46

Jeremiah
Zechariah
Nehemiah
Nathaniel
Obadiah
Jonah
Joseph
David
Daniel

I love Jesse but Dh vetoed it. Gideon would be my first choice if we had another baby.

I think a lot of names become popular if Royals choose it or if people with that name become famous. Lots of Harrys my eldest's age because of Harry potter and Edith became popular again because of downton abbey. Elijah became a popular name when lord of the rings came out.

Pengane · 06/08/2026 23:46

Job, David, Solomon, Samuel, Melchizedek, Joash, Joshua, Benjamin , Joseph

CypressMoon · 07/08/2026 00:04

I like a lot of those names, especially Ezekiel, Zachariah, Raphael.

MeanwhileinGilead · 07/08/2026 00:13
