Is Ezra a passing fad?

What are your opinions on Ezra? What associations do you have with the name? Any stereotypes? How many do you know?

Ezra is a lovely name. Really like it. I think it is popular enough that people know the name, how to say it etc without it being super faddy/ fashionable.

I would say definitely faddy*. I know three Ezras and they're all under the age of 3. It's because people are always looking for that unused but useable biblical name. We've had Noah and Isaac, now Ezra and Reuben are very popular. Amos and Abel are probably up next.

*that's not to say you shouldn't use it.

I think there’s 4 in our new year 8 cohort (out of 150ish). So not unpopular, but not like Callums in year 11 (3 in one class!).

Ezra I think of as the Ethan of ten years ago.
It's popular time will pass.

I picture Ezra as a toothless hillbilly that votes Republican for 2nd Amendment rights even though he has no healthcare or running water.

PP mentioned Ethan - which I think sounds very Gen X cool. ie hot 90's guys.

I didn’t know it was biblical until I read this thread. I think it’s a very nice sounding name, but I must admit my first thought when hearing it a few years back was why is it used as a male name when it ends in the letter A? Maybe that’s just me, as I don’t think anyone else has mentioned that on this thread – but it was my first thought. Only because it’s normally feminine names that end in the letter A and male versions often end in the letter O.

I hope so as names with a z sound good.

It is popular here, in the same way as Noah, Elijah and Jude. It was more New Testament for years: I went to school surrounded by Marks and Matthews and Pauls.

I think it sounds very feminine tbh. I also think Rowan does.

Like others have said, Old Testament names have become more popular for boys in recent years. I’m surprised Micah isn’t more popular though.

My great grandad born about 1880 was Ezra. Staunch Methodist who worked down the mines.
Other than that I think of it as an American name.

I know two small children and one man in his fifties called Ezra. And one cat. I like it.

I only know one and he is in his 30s. Former Jehovah’s Witness who is now pansexual and living his life!

I don’t think it’s over popular. I haven’t come across anyone called Ezra.

There’s only one over ever known. He’ll be heading towards 50 now.

Luca/Luka? Joshua?

The only one I know is 9 and his mum dresses him up in girls clothes, though I suspect thats more about her and using him to project her beliefs.

Oh and my daughter said he cried at a birthday party they both went to because he was the only kid who wasn’t allowed chocolate because apparently he’s a vegan 🙄

I know one who is late 20s but changed his name to Ezra.

I know a 7 year old Ezra, has a brother called Noah. George Ezra is another though last name not first. Love Ezra ❤️ and it’s biblical.

Oh yes those are good examples! To be honest, I found Luca a bit surprising as it seemed feminine-sounding when I first heard it being used in recent years. But I have always accepted Joshua as a 'normal' boy name - must just be to do with what I'm used to!
