Is Ezra a passing fad?

What are your opinions on Ezra? What associations do you have with the name? Any stereotypes? How many do you know?

I only know one and he's in his 50s!

It could be the new Oscar or Noah.
Some names that are “cool” end up overused.

I called my much loved dog Ezra ( 2000-2016) I thought it was funny because Ezra Pound, Ezra Hound. It's actually a lovely name and there have been a couple in my school, it's certainly not madly popular but it is a classic name, especially if you forget the previously mentioned poet was a fascist. My current dog is a bit of twat and could pull off a fascist name to be fair.

I mean it's in the Old Testament, so depends on what you call a 'fad'.

To me, it reminds me of Ezra Jack Keats, writer and illustrator of some of my favourite children's books (eg Whistle for Willie/The Snowy Day)

So I think of it as a sweet, positive, joyous - and timeless - name.

Biblical, easy to spell, cool so there are many positives!

I know 2 babies called Ezra. I only know 5 babies including my own.

I know 4 primary age boys called Ezra. 2 in the school I work in, 2 in other schools. Definitely more popular than it used to be. I like it, for me there are Biblical associations but that isn't the case for all the boys I know called Ezra.

Seems to be popular in under 10s at the moment.

You either like the name and it's meaning or you don't.

The only Ezra I know is early 40s.

I think of a man in his 50's with a devout church attending mother who still dresses to the nines on a Sunday morning. I also thing of George, the singer.

I like it and can see why it might be popular again. I don't know any, my children are young teens.

The only association I have is with the post-exilic priest in the days of Nehemia (and Zerubbabel, now there is a name and a half!) who closed the Jewish Canon and helped build the Second Temple. One of the great names in Jewish history and pretty much responsible for the shape of the Jewish scriptures as we have them today. An impressive leader and scholar!

I like it. Think of it along the same lines as Micah and Arlo (I know Arlo isn't from the Bible but its a four letter two vowel name).
I think of Ezra from Star Wars Rebels for what it's worth...

It's classic in the sense that it is Biblical, but it's now more popular (in this country) than it's ever been in recent history. I think in the future it will be like Joshua now i.e. Biblical, could theoretically belong to any age group but mainly associated with men born in the 1990s/2000s.

I think it’s fad and will be associated with babies born at this time.

Have you checked the trend on darkgreener? Ezra has climbed steadily for the past 10+ years, it was ranked at 91 in 2016 and at 38 in 2024. I would say a steady climb like that means it's not necessarily a 'fad' compared to something like Jaden which had a big spike for a couple of years in the 2000s and then dropped off again. We may not have hit Ezra's peak yet, so it may grow more popular still.

There are two in my child's year in primary school. I don't view it as a 'faddy' name, just an old testament name that's currently popular (along with Noah, Reuben and others). I like it.

It’s a lovely name - quite popular at the moment in the same way Noah was a few years ago, but not horribly so. I only know one, who is 3.

Lovely Biblical name

Rewatched Jonathon Creek from the 90s and there was discussion of how Ezra was an unexpected name for a young man-and that was then. Not come across any in any workplace, so people aged 18-65, but there are some in my kids' primary now.
Is it true not many British men's names seem to end in an a, until quite recently, as in other countries I've been in, an a sound ending is more common. I like it.

My cat is named after Ezra Bridger! My son’s best friend is called Ezra as well I really like it.
