Ellis or Fabian for a boy? I also like Alexander but am not considering it because it will be shortened.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Ellis or Elliot

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 04/08/2026 14:36

Alexander would be my choice and call him Alexander.

If not Ellis

KazzyKizz · 04/08/2026 14:42

Both are nice names, but I much prefer Fabian. It sounds nice, looks nice, and is uncommon in the UK.

Firebird83 · 04/08/2026 14:58

Fabian

dontforgetme · 04/08/2026 15:32

I have an Ellis. I love his name so much! I don’t shorten it but all his school pals call him El.

Ellis

PoesieAndPeaches · 04/08/2026 15:35

Fabian.

Fabian - tall, handsome and stylish. Looks good with 'Dr' in front of it and on a name badge.

Fabulous name is Fabian.

Calliopespa · 04/08/2026 15:45

Fabian is a lovely sounding name, but I often warn OPs it has a particular meaning and political associations - which you might not mind, but I always feel a child should start off in life with a political "clean slate," as it were.

VoteForCountBinface · 04/08/2026 16:03

Fabian is a bit close to labia.

Bakeittillyoumakeit · 04/08/2026 16:10

Ellis is definitely better.

Fabian sounds like a character from Mills and Boon or like someone who would grow up to be a stripper/porn star. Oh just read there was a character called Fabian in the Mills and Boon books.

Yes, but the Fabian Society was named after a Roman called Fabius, and Fabian has existed as a name in it's own right for centuries. It's particular meaning is in the latin for beans!

CrypticClueless · 04/08/2026 16:13

Anyway - I say Fabian!

Yes, I know, but it is now the overriding association, just as Mark and Spencer are both names but really wouldn't work for twins because of the association.

ETA but I also prefer Fabian to Ellis, just mentioning the association because I'd rather hear before I named my child not after. We ruled it out for that.

Definitely Ellis

We also have an Ellis but me and his Dad used to call him El, until we realised he preferred Ellis and is only called that
I asked his worked colleague to tell El I was outside and she didn't have a clue

Viviennemary · 04/08/2026 16:17

Alexander is much better than either of the two others. Fabian is totally dire.

I thought exactly the same

I have to say I like Alexander best and most names end up getting shortened.

Ellis will get El and Fabian Fab or Fabe.

MyKindHiker · 04/08/2026 16:52

Fabian.

I imagine an adult Fabian to be handsome, charming and nice to women. A Fabian could be successful as a CEO or as an artist. Great name. Wish I'd thought of it for my kid.

Would be amusing if Fabian are up to be a massive EDL fan

namechange62 · 04/08/2026 16:57

We have an Ellis.. great name.. but his brother calls him Smelly Ellie! He's only a baby tho so plenty of time to redirect..
And my friend has a Fabian who's called Fabie Baby by close family..

BasilThePlant · 04/08/2026 16:57

Ellis

bridgetreilly · 04/08/2026 20:47

Ellis, though I would spell it Elis.

Fabian is a bit Tarquin.

Why the Welsh spelling?

youalright · 04/08/2026 20:58

Definitely Ellis, Fabian is an awful name

Lilypad789 · 04/08/2026 21:00

Depends where you live I imagine. Fabian would be a name children would pick on around where I live. I quite like them all though. I prefer Alexander.
