Ellis or Fabian for a boy? I also like Alexander but am not considering it because it will be shortened.

I have an Ellis, but she is my daughter!!! Love the name for either

LilyLemonade · 04/08/2026 21:54

Both lovely but I would pick Fabian.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 04/08/2026 22:12

Ellis

Giraffehaver · 04/08/2026 22:16

Ellis. Less pretentious

FunnyOrca · 04/08/2026 23:30

Both are nice, but Ellis has the edge for me

narcASD · 04/08/2026 23:46

Ellis
Fabian is dreadful

Snugglemonkey · 04/08/2026 23:50

2 letters different. So as close a Tom is to bum.

Assuming you are referring to my pp, no because with Tom and Bum only one letter matches.

Elliot

Ellis and Fabian will be shortened too, teens shorten all names. Just go with what you like.

MoralOrLegal · 05/08/2026 09:55

Not really a fan of either, but "Fabian" does have strong political connotations to me!

Nincompoo · 05/08/2026 09:58

Fabian is a fantastic name. I also like Cassian, which has a similar vibe.

Ellis isn’t my cup of tea.

OttersOnAPlane · 05/08/2026 10:01

Fabian is an utter pill who's the office bore - or a wanky Mills and Boon hero with more hair than brains.

Ellis is a good name.

BlackberrySquash · 05/08/2026 10:14

I know a Fabian and an Ellis. The Fabian I know is pronounced FAB-Ian are you pronouncing it FAY-bee-uhn? I prefer the the way of the one I know, and he is quite fab!

Ellis is more normal and is lovely, but Fabian is more exciting and on that basis I'd go with Fabian.

I love Alexander too but he will very likely become Alex.

I've only even known it to be FAY bian.

Aligirlbear · 05/08/2026 13:08

Both Ellis and Fabian will be shortened by friends in time likely El and Fab - neither of which are particularly attractive. much prefer Alexander and the inevitable Alex by his friends. You can introduce your son and call him Alexander.

I heard it for many years before I saw it written down. If I'd seen it written down first I would definitely assume FAYbian. He was always just FABian. His mother is not from the UK so I assumed it was a name from her country or the way her country pronounce it. He is the only one I have ever met or come across.

I really like it, either pronunciation to be honest.

girljulian · 05/08/2026 14:57

Fabian definition from some names site: "a person who is known for being charismatic and charming"

lol -- er, no, it means Bean Man, essentially! I do like it though.

JMSA · 05/08/2026 15:07

I don’t like Fabian and I think of Ellis as a surname. Sorry.

AgnesMcDoo · 05/08/2026 15:13

Alexander and just don’t shorten it. Lots of people don’t.

otherwise Ellis

abracadabra1980 · 05/08/2026 15:17

Fabian is possibly only kind if your child lives in London and will be privately educated.
