What do you think of the name Casey? What is the overall vibe of the name? Before you met a Casey, would you assume them to be a man or a woman?

It’s an awful name. Very American.

@HoppityBun , Cassie and Casey don't sound the same..

This is true. I was suggesting alternatives

DeeNiall · 24/06/2026 17:45

@MadeForThis , I know two Caseys (male), a female Kaci-Something and a Casei.

Sploon · 24/06/2026 17:46

Have taught a few Caseys over the past 15 years, all girls. Definitely associate it as a girl's name. Associate it with names like Lacie - not super popular but probably belonging to a girl born between 2005 and 2020.

It’s also a first name. Have you never heard of Casey Jones? Possibly Cassie / Cassy for a girl but definitely Casey would be ok.

It was used as a first name by certain elements of the Irish diaspora in the US, like the annoying muddle that is ‘Caitlin’, which is the Irish name ‘Cáitlín’ (pronounced Coytleen or Coytchleen) mispronounced by someone who’s only seen it written down, doesn’t understand Irish orthography and thinks fadas are just decorative. Then got copied by the kind of Americans who think it’s cute to call girls Blake and Baxter. None of this means it’s a nice name. It’s like calling your daughter Smith.

I think of Casey Jones, the engineer driver in the song …..when you hear the whistle of the engine, it’s Casey at the throttle of the cannonball express….

Exactly this 👆🏼. He was a man & I would expect Casey to be male.

Skybluepinky · 24/06/2026 17:53

I would assume girl, but the rough estates they use it for both.

powershowerforanhour · 24/06/2026 18:02

I would think American surfer dude, probably mates with Kelly Slater and Laird Hamilton.

"It’s a surname. Using it as a first name for either sex has social class connotation, which may of course not bother you. But in general, if you wouldn’t call your child Smith, Singh or Evans, don’t call it Casey or Sullivan."

Have you ever been to Scotland or Northern Ireland?

DimwittedSkater · 24/06/2026 18:05

Definitely a woman.

But it's a weird name that doesn't sound like an actual name at all. Just sounds like a normal word with an "ee" ending.

If you had three babies, you could name them Casey, Pursey, and Handbaggy! 🤣🤣🤣

Pieceofpurplesky · 24/06/2026 19:00

I know one girl (14) and three males (4,24 and 30s)

Purplecatshopaholic · 24/06/2026 19:02

I know a boy and a girl called Casey. I like it for either.

CheeseWisely · 24/06/2026 19:45

I would probably assume Man, but the only Casey I know is real life is a Woman! It suits her.

Hello19834 · 25/06/2026 00:06

I've only ever heard it for females.
Don't like it.

nocoolnamesleft · 25/06/2026 00:11

I would assume USA male.

PrincessOfPreschool · 25/06/2026 00:12

Definitely a boy's name for me

scottishGirl · 25/06/2026 08:05

Unisex name for me. I've met female American Casey's before but perhaps spelt differently

Bellybellas · 25/06/2026 13:24

Unisex for me!

Do you know how Australians pronounce Megan? I dare them to do that in Wales.

mummabubs · 25/06/2026 14:26

I went to school with a Casey (boy) but the two Caseys I currently know as an adult are both female, so in my experience either!!

TeflonMom · 25/06/2026 14:31

Casey Casey you’re the divil, when you get behind the wheel

bridgetreilly · 25/06/2026 19:06

I would assume American. At which point all bets are off.

KayEmAy · 25/06/2026 20:22

I think it's a true unisex name. Though I personally love it for a boy :)

oliviaAustin · 25/06/2026 20:43

I would always see a Casey as female.

JayJayj · 26/06/2026 06:52

I have known, personally, a female Casey, and follow a male artist named Casey.

I wouldn’t assume gender by this name. Some gender neutral names I can see as more one or the other depending on how many I know. Ashley for example, I’ve know 1 female but several males. So it feels more masculine to me.

IDontHateRainbows · 26/06/2026 06:54

Boy.

I've seen it spelt Kacie for a boy too which looks too much like Katie.
