Is Casey truly unisex?

What do you think of the name Casey? What is the overall vibe of the name? Before you met a Casey, would you assume them to be a man or a woman?

I would assume man — I thought it was a boy’s name.

TenThousandSpoons · 24/06/2026 15:07

A man. Specifically I would think of a man who has been in Love Island too many times.

GingerLeopard · 24/06/2026 15:08

I'd assume woman first, only because I've known a female Casey my whole life, so I associate it with her. But I do love the name on boys too, I do think it's definitely unisex.

Myswweetchild · 24/06/2026 15:09

I think unisex. I've taught both boys and girls called Casey.
I don't like it.

DeeNiall · 24/06/2026 15:09

It's a surname. I know male ones and female ones but I don't think it sounds classy.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 24/06/2026 15:09

I've only met men called Casey and they were all American

Xanadu58 · 24/06/2026 15:11

I know one Casey and she's a woman

patooties · 24/06/2026 15:12

I know one of each. Not sure if I like it for either though.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 24/06/2026 15:18

I think of Casey Jones, the engineer driver in the song …..when you hear the whistle of the engine, it’s Casey at the throttle of the cannonball express….

MadeForThis · 24/06/2026 15:20

I know Casey - boy and Kaci - girl.

Honeyhonay · 24/06/2026 15:21

I would assume it was male rather than unisex.

DrFoxtrot · 24/06/2026 15:21

I’d automatically think man

Elecee · 24/06/2026 15:22

It's a complete female name to me, and my first thought is Casey Anthony (which isn't a great association to have). If you don't know who she is, have a google. It's definitely LC and almost very redneck/Southern American to me. It would sound even more redneck on a man.

MostlyGhostly · 24/06/2026 15:23

I’ve met two, both girls spelt the same as pp. One will be about 28 now and the other about 17. I’ve always thought of it as a girls name in the UK.
As you asked for opinions, I’ve edited to say I don’t like it but I don’t like surnames as first names generally.

ExplodingSmittens · 24/06/2026 15:25

I know a couple of each sex including one spelt KC.

MCF86 · 24/06/2026 15:27

I didn't know of the name at all until I met one. I met another much later, both girls so in my head it's a girls name (but I know it isn't really)

CurlewKate · 24/06/2026 15:31

There is no such thing as a unisex name. There are boys names, which for a while a few girls use. And then there’s a tipping point when boys stop using them and they become girl’s names.

I'd say this one is unisex given the fact that it started out as a surname. That makes it neutral to me.

So are Hudson, Jackson, Jenson, Fletcher, Cooper, Carter and Hunter unisex?

No, I'd personally consider those solidly masculine because they're mostly used for boys. I'm only basing it on usage. (I have seen Carter and Hunter used for girls, though.) My point was that I'm not sure how you could classify a name like Casey that was originally only a surname and has been in use for both genders as being a male name. It's like taking the surnames Miller, Kennedy, Taylor, Ramsey and classifying them as solidly male or solidly female. How would you even begin to decide that?

scotsmumofteens · 24/06/2026 15:57

I know a lovely female Casey ! Xx

RandomRavelryPerson · 24/06/2026 15:58

One of the Co-founders of Ravelry, the coder, used to be a man called Casey and is now a woman called Cassidy. (no discussion needed, not the point)

From this I concluded that Casey is a man’s name, at least in the USA.
