Is Casey truly unisex?

What do you think of the name Casey? What is the overall vibe of the name? Before you met a Casey, would you assume them to be a man or a woman?

No, I'd personally consider those solidly masculine because they're mostly used for boys. I'm only basing it on usage. (I have seen Carter and Hunter used for girls, though.) My point was that I'm not sure how you could classify a name like Casey that was originally only a surname and has been in use for both genders as being a male name. It's like taking the surnames Miller, Kennedy, Taylor, Ramsey and classifying them as solidly male or solidly female. How would you even begin to decide that?

Edited

You posted unisex given the fact that it started out as a surname
but now you're saying you're basing it on usage.

Well as it is a surname I suppose it should be unisex. But that depends how popular it becomes with women / girls to a large extent. For example Kelly seems to be viewed as a girl's name now , whereas Ryan is a boy's name? I've yet to meet a Casey mind you.

Scaryspicer · 24/06/2026 16:16

Dislike it for either.
it’s marginally better for a boy.

not a fan

They were all originally unisex and neutral because they started out as surnames. Over time, they have become either masculine or feminine based on HEAVILY being used for one gender. Casey persists as a unisex name because it is used for both genders. Casey is much more similar to a name like Taylor than it is to a name like Jackson. Would you classify Taylor as being solidly masculine, solidly feminine, or unisex?

I think of Casey Jones, the engineer driver in the song …..when you hear the whistle of the engine, it’s Casey at the throttle of the cannonball express….

Riding a train high on cocaine
Casey Jones ya better watch your speed!

I know both girls and boys who are named Casey, however I personally think it suits boys better

KazzyKizz · 24/06/2026 16:24

It's a name for a girl/woman. The only people that I've known called Casey have been women. I do know a man called KC, but that's not the same.

BrownRedPink · 24/06/2026 16:36

I guess it's technically unisex, but it suits a girl much better. It sounds very wet on a boy.

Daffodilsinthespring · 24/06/2026 16:43

I’d assume woman. Too feminine for a man.

onlygeese · 24/06/2026 16:50

I would assume male unless spelt with K.

DeeNiall · 24/06/2026 16:51

Taylor - unisex because I know male and female ones but they're not British. Both north American but UK-based.

I don't really like surnames as first names unless they are the first names that can be surnames type like James or George. The others tend to date badly. Kelly and Lindsay seem very 1970s.

I know Casey - boy and Kaci - girl.

Is it just me that reads Kaci as Cacky? 💩

WhimsyWhim · 24/06/2026 17:26

I'd assume woman.

Casey sounds girly to me.

MindYourMannersDarling · 24/06/2026 17:29

I would think it was a man.

The only female Casey I have ever encountered was a Kaci-Jo or Kaci-Mae or something like that

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 24/06/2026 17:31

Well the first two Caseys who spring to mind when I hear the name are male disc jokey Casey Kasem and female child-killer Casey Anthony, so yeah, that's fairly unisex.

angelcake20 · 24/06/2026 17:32

I’d also assume male, the girls are know are all Kacie. Not keen on either.

Athwart · 24/06/2026 17:33

It’s a surname. Using it as a first name for either sex has social class connotation, which may of course not bother you. But in general, if you wouldn’t call your child Smith, Singh or Evans, don’t call it Casey or Sullivan.

Casey Kasem, American presenter of the Billboard music charts on the radio - and voice of a zillion cartoon characters (including shaggy in Scooby-Doo) throughout the 1970s and 80s.

Casey At The Bat, poem about a baseball game in Mudville I learned in school.

Casey Affleck.

All blokes.

Loures · 24/06/2026 17:38

Casey Anthony is the exact type of person that I picture when I picture a Casey, so I'm going to say woman.

boysmuminherts · 24/06/2026 17:38

Casey Affleck and Casey Jones burgers
Male to me

It’s also a first name. Have you never heard of Casey Jones? Possibly Cassie / Cassy for a girl but definitely Casey would be ok.

DeeNiall · 24/06/2026 17:40

@HoppityBun , Cassie and Casey don't sound the same..
