Can a name really be boring?

Jussl · Yesterday 19:18

I've liked very simple traditional names my entire life. When people ask what names we're considering and I tell them (Andrea, Christopher, Cynthia, Kieran, Mary), I get very mixed reactions. The worst reaction has been from my SIL who has called these names boring. I understand that a name may become dull if you've met so many people with it, but it's not like these are wildly popular names in 2026. I just don't understand what exactly makes a name exciting or boring and why a name even has to be exciting. If the parents find it pretty and like the way it sounds, can't that be well enough?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Boring actually sounds like a good adjective for a name - exciting names would be a burden to live with !

BettyTheGreat · Yesterday 19:22

I love your name ideas. They aren't boring. I don't remember ever meeting a baby Cynthia or Andrea.

Sil was very rude and incorrect

GoldenPineapple15 · Yesterday 19:24

I have a Christopher and he is the only one in his primary school . These names are classic , not boring. There is a reason names have staying power - lots of people like them !

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 19:25

I prefer names where there’s not too many around. Cynthia isn’t used much now and I really like it and it’s not boring. Mary is just biblical and always around! Royal family names too. Everywhere. If you find 4 dc in a class with the same name, it is a bit boring!

WilliamsandWatsonTooLateNSoul · Yesterday 19:31

Brian
Kevin
Colin
They were boring when in vogue .

CurlewKate · Yesterday 19:37

Of course a name cannot be boring! It’s just Mumsnet silliness.

Perhaps I'm confusing the name aspect and any Kevin,Brian ,Colin I've ever met were akin to watching paint dry.

I have a secret hankering for Mary, too.
My kids all have boring names. It's ok, I don't mind at all, the (now adult) DC don't seem to mind either.

If names are boring simply for being popular, then Alfie, Olivia, Kieran, Zoe, Amelia, Chloe, Jack, Emily ... must lead the pack for "boring", right?

Hinthebuild · Yesterday 19:55

I think it's a very subjective thing. I consider very short names ie. Ava, Mia, Max, Ian boring but know that a lot of people like those sorts of names. Trendy names ie. Emma, Chloe, Amelia, Oliver, River, Jaxon are boring to me. There's also a very specific type of outdated name that I consider boring ie. Brian, Jeffrey, Robert, Brittany, Kimberly, Heather, Tiffany. I don't consider any of the names you've listed boring.

seasidemum83 · Yesterday 19:58

Never met an Andrea or Cynthia in my life!
Love Mary 💕 there was a reason it became popular at a time . Saying that I think it’s almost rare for little ones now

Firebird83 · Yesterday 20:00

They’re not boring names, they would be unusual on babies nowadays!

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · Yesterday 20:02

Your SIL is very rude.
Name fads come and go.
I don’t think I’ve met any young Andreas or Cynthias, I really like them. I’ve always liked Christopher too.
Ignore her. It’s your choice and no, your names are not boring.

thelongesday · Yesterday 20:08

I think names can be boring - Ann, Jane, Bob or Pat.

I think Mary is boring but your other names are just a bit dated.

BaronessBomburst · Yesterday 20:09

Cynthia is lovely and most certainly not boring.

bumptybum · Yesterday 20:14

Absolutely call your child, whatever you want to. The only thing that stood out to me was the randomness of your name choices! I usually find people like names of a type like
Hugo
Ollie
Monty
Jago

Joe
Sam
Ben
Will

Amelia
Maya
Millie
Ellie

Greta
Elspeth
Prudence
Eloise

But yours are a real mixture of different types of names with different flavours. And I kinda like that because it means you’ve gone for actual names you like not a specific demographic style

Raquelos · Yesterday 20:16

The only Cynthia I can think of is Cynthia 'Madam Sin' Payne. Notorious Madam in the 70s and 80s, and a very amusing chat show guest in the 90's. Definitely not boring 😁

BrownRedPink · Yesterday 20:55

An interesting or uncommon name does not make an interesting person. The most interesting and fun people that I've met are called Anne, Barbara, Sarah, Stephanie, Michael, Daniel. Make of that what you will.

timoteigirl · Yesterday 21:39

I think what is a boring name is very subjective. Some very popular names such as Olivia or Leo are extremely boring to me. Someone else here could say they are classic.

Giraffehaver · Yesterday 22:31

Cynthia is positively inspired! Not boring through overuse, not a boring sound, not boring through being safe. It's brilliant as are your other ideas. Cynthia wins tho!

LivingTheDreamish · Today 02:15

There are different kinds of boring. Amelia and Olivia are gorgeous names, I remember when they were very uncommon and they sounded fresh and so pretty. And they still are pretty but....

Mary is a perfect example of a simple name that is really lovely. I put Anna and Emma in the same category. But I don't have the same love for Sue or Jill and would class them as dull. It does really just come down to personal taste in the end I suppose.

Your names are all quite different so I would ignore the dull comment from SIL, she just doesn't like them (and is being rude about it).

Justyouwaitandseeagain · Today 02:23

I mean imagine telling Cynthia Erivo (full name - Cynthia Chinasaokwu Onyedinmanasu Owezuke Amarachukwu Echimino Erivo) that her name is boring!

l think the way a first name sounds with the persons surname and eventually fits with their personality / lifestyle / character makes a big difference.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · Today 05:25

Your name choices are most definitely not boring. But neither will they lead to raised eyebrows, or "pardon, I didn't quite catch your name" for the rest of your child's life. Which sounds good.

My children's names, OTOH, are madly boring. And I don't care.

OvernightBloats · Today 05:47

Some names can be boring - the only one in your list which to me is boring is Mary. Prefer Maria to Mary.

My middle name is so boring because thousands of others have the same middle name - Jane! I like my first name but middle name is so dull.

We have a Robert. We intentionally chose it as a typical/classic/ordinary name, everyone knows a Rob, everyone knows how to spell it etc. He’s 3. We were surprised to find out his name is super uncommon the year he was born and well outside the top 100. But we had a surprising amount of compliments too.

Icanseeasquirrel · Today 06:09

Would be dull if we were all the same. I’m from a generation where everyone is Mike, Mark, Dave, Clare, Alison. My children are in the Josh, Isabel, Sam, Jack, Tom era.
Freshness of names changes every three generations and new ones sometimes take hold.
I’d be interested in names she likes as yours are pretty uncommon now.
