Can a name really be boring?

I've liked very simple traditional names my entire life. When people ask what names we're considering and I tell them (Andrea, Christopher, Cynthia, Kieran, Mary), I get very mixed reactions. The worst reaction has been from my SIL who has called these names boring. I understand that a name may become dull if you've met so many people with it, but it's not like these are wildly popular names in 2026. I just don't understand what exactly makes a name exciting or boring and why a name even has to be exciting. If the parents find it pretty and like the way it sounds, can't that be well enough?

I don't find any names boring, but I do find it boring when people post (slightly more) unconventional names on MN and then get replies suggesting they pick more classic names like Elizabeth or James.

I don't understand the need some people have for everyone to have classic names - the wider the range of names the better in my view, makes things much more interesting.

What names does your SIL like? Bet she likes overused ones like Theo, Ava, Freya and Arlo.
Andrea - seems a bit 1960s. Not awful.
Christopher - classic
Cynthia - seems 1940s. Don't like it
Kieran - very1970s. Seems downmarket
Mary - classic

💯

Or says she likes something "unique" like Luna 🙄

(I love the name Luna, but it is not unique)

She seems to like nature names. Her sons are Phoenix and River (think that was a coincidence). Her daughters have flower/plant names (Lily and Fern). I'm not keen on any.

This is making a lot of sense. She knows that her children's names will look ridiculous next to your child's name so is trying to shame you into picking a strange name by calling your list boring. The only normal name that she's got is Lily, and that's even overused.

NamingNoNames · 23/06/2026 19:40

I don't like Phoenix at all, River seems wet.
Lily has been extremely popular for decades. Fern looks better than it sounds.
None of those seem particularly exciting.

They're a completely different vibe to your list.

I think with names you need to consider how they go with the surname.

The names lists I find boring are ones where it looks like the parents have only considered names that are currently very popular for children.
With Rose, May, Grace or James as a middle name.

I find a 'theme' for the siblings' names a bit naff.

Never met a well behaved phoenix. Honestly though op never tell anyone your name ideas ahead of time. Once you present them with baby Mary they'll love her!

Bellybellas · 24/06/2026 11:35

Of course a name can be boring and unmemorable. John Smith, Harry Jones, Emily Smith or Ellie Johnson are examples of such names. They are so common that they no longer fulfill their purpose of identifying a person!

HairyToity · 24/06/2026 17:40

Your name choices aren't boring. Ignore. I like them all, including Andrea (might get shortened to Andi).

NamingNoNames · 24/06/2026 17:50

I really dislike Andi for a girl.

I wouldn't trust the opinion of anyone who named their own child Phoenix, River, or Fern... Your choices are lovely.
