Jesse

Thoughts on Jesse for a boy? DH is pushing for it. I like it but know so many female Jessies/Jessis (often short for Jessica) that it kind of takes away the charm. I feel the same way about Jamie. Meeting too many people with a certain name makes it feel dull.

I doubt the younger generations will be using this name in a derogatory manner. I’d never heard of it, and I’m not that young. With the exception of ‘Karen’, I don’t think it’s at all common anymore to use names as insults.

Exactly.
"Karen" as an insult has become a no-no so within a few years that will be gone.

Aquamarineteal · 01/06/2026 22:17

It's not used as an insult as much as it used to be in Scotland, but it is still an insult.

Only if someone actually says it and uses it that way.
But why would someone....?

I have never met, nor do I know a single boy or man called Jesse.

It could be regional, but there are many in early years settings round us. Look at the stats on darkgreener- lots born in England and Wales in the last few years! So chances are you will meet a Jesse at some point.

LemonFlavour · 01/06/2026 22:41

I don’t agree with the PP calling it wet. I definitely think of it as sounding better on a boy. It’s very masculine to me. It sounds like a man who would be brave and not afraid of anything.

Well, at a football game, if one player is rolling around on the ground after a tackle, hoping to get a penalty, and the other team's supporters think he is over-egging it, you'd hear "Get up ya big Jessie!"

Well then it's time people grew up and stopped doing that 🙄

Firebird83 · 01/06/2026 23:20

I know a 10 year old one. We’re in England but he has a Scottish dad which surprised me as I thought it was an insult there.

I showed that comment to DH who was completely bemused - apparently football insults tend to be a lot, let's say, stronger. He described that one as being from a 1950s football annual.

I really don't think it's a modern insult at all, at least where we are. Thankfully very old-fashioned.

I love it and like the Biblical connection.

Bellybellas · Yesterday 16:52

Girls name!

I know lots of Jessicas and Jessies

It sounds so feminine. I also don’t like the Big Jesse association.

Genuinely awful. Wet and weedy.

Edited

I agree. It sounds so soft and feminine.

It would shorten to Jess?

BananaPeels · Yesterday 16:56

I really like it. Was on our list many years ago

BCBird · Yesterday 16:58

Don't like it

VeganSteakAndFries · Yesterday 17:05

It’s cute
