Thoughts on Jesse for a boy? DH is pushing for it. I like it but know so many female Jessies/Jessis (often short for Jessica) that it kind of takes away the charm. I feel the same way about Jamie. Meeting too many people with a certain name makes it feel dull.

I’m in Scotland…calling someone jessie is derogatory…so personally wouldn’t - but you need to do you OP.

In the North Midlands, and it's a derogatory name here too. I wouldn't bestow that name on a boy. Sorry

Daphnedolittle2 · 01/06/2026 16:32

I've always liked it, but my DH hated it so vetoed for our son. Male friends I have didn't like it either.

Rubbleonthedouble2 · 01/06/2026 16:33

All those saying it's derogatory, what do you mean?

Are you glad now that your DH vetoed it?

LilacDrift · 01/06/2026 16:37

It's a cool name. I love it.

dontforgetme · 01/06/2026 16:39

I absolutely love it op!

Daffodilsinthespring · 01/06/2026 17:19

Really dislike for boy or girl but far worse for a boy.

RaininSummer · 01/06/2026 17:41

I love that for a boy.

I know. As I said though I just think 'girls name' when I hear someone say it. And Jesse James and Jesse Jackson were born a long time ago. When it suited men a bit more. I also think 'Jesse' - for a boy - is more common in America, not the UK. (And even then quite rare compared to many other names.) I have never met a male Jesse in my life.

I think most people will struggle badly to find a famous Jesse born after the 1940s.

JMO.

Edited

They won't struggle to find a famous Jesse in, say, twenty years' time - so many boy Jesses being named these days one or two of them are bound to be famous!

It's grown on me, very trendy name, similar vibe to Jude, Ezra etc.

CuppaWhiteTea · 01/06/2026 18:57

No it's not.
It's pronounced Jessie.

Cherrytree86 · 01/06/2026 19:04

You need something more unusual OP so it feels less dull

LilacDrift · 01/06/2026 19:05

It's pronounced Jessie. Although it's often shortened to Jess.

JustGiveMeReason · 01/06/2026 19:06

I'm with @HugoThatway and others.

It is an insult where I live (England) so not a name I'd give to a son of mine.

Yes it’s used as an insult.
I wouldn’t use it because I wouldn’t give potential bullies any ammunition.

There are many much nicer names.

HoldMyWine · 01/06/2026 19:09

Love it

HoldMyWine · 01/06/2026 19:09

I don’t think it is used as an insult nowadays.

Not in English-speaking countries! It’s pronounced JESS-EE (same as Jessie) in the UK.
