Thoughts on Clarice?

My husband so badly wants to name our daughter Clarice but I can’t help but think of silence of the lambs and that’s exactly the character he wants to name her after cause he thinks she’s a badass. I suggested Clarisse instead but he says no if it’s not spelled the same. I picked the middle names after my grandmother so I really want to let him lead on the first name so I just need some outside opinions on the name.

I just thought of that FUHFUHFUHFUHFUH noise Hannibal Lecter makes.

other than that, it’s delightful

UhOhRatPoo · 30/05/2026 18:54

Great point that the character is a badass and triumphs in the end. I did think SOTL immediately but I am sold!

Holidaymodeon · 30/05/2026 18:57

Bait thread for sure.

Silence of the lambs

ToadRage · 30/05/2026 19:56

Very old fashioned and not pretty.

PurpleFlower1983 · 30/05/2026 19:57

Silent of the Lambs…hello Clarice. It’s too iconic.

setadriftonmemorybliss · 30/05/2026 20:39

Very Silence of the Lambs vibes. Avoid

onethousandandtwo · 30/05/2026 20:58

You just know teenage boys will be doing the lip licking scene.

we have an aunt called Clarice, she is aged, wears real pearls,
very posh, not a warm lady at all, yes, old fashioned, told me I
should be wearing a petticoat under my frock
she is 98

Silence of the lambs or Clarice Bean.

But mostly Silence of the lambs.

How about Clarissa or Carissa

Clarissa is the young lady fleeing an arranged marriage who is raped and destroyed,

(in the tv series by Sean Bean)

StationJack · 31/05/2026 11:48

Clarissa; or, The History of a Young Lady - Wikipedia

Clarrie isn't very nice.

permanently · 31/05/2026 12:05

“Dear Clarice, I have followed with enthusiasm…” Beautiful name. It’s a yes from me!

FlipFlopZebra · 31/05/2026 12:09

I don’t immediately think of silence of the lambs. I know a Clarice who is around 13/14

Witchlite · 31/05/2026 16:31

Claris? I think it means bright (or something like that) in Latin. It’s prettier and doesn’t have the same film connection.

StationJack · 31/05/2026 16:52

Claris looks like a bad spelling of Clarice. Neither are popular.

Northbynorthbest · 31/05/2026 17:01

Silence of the Lambs

BestZebbie · 03/06/2026 11:30

I think it is ok, because anyone who would tease her at school will be too young to have watched the film (or even if a couple do, most won’t have seen it so the joke won’t carry far). People who were approaching adulthood at the millennium will think of silence of the lambs immediately but for the generation in the middle Lecter means the Hannibal series, not Anthony Hopkins.

flipfloplaugh · 03/06/2026 11:34

I think it's because it's a fairly unusual name, and the ONLY point of reference for most people will be Hannibal Lecter. Obvs lots of names can have bad connotations, but they have other refs too. Fava beans are the only thing I think of for Clarice!

Tabarnak · 03/06/2026 11:36

I immediately thought Clarice Cliff, the very wonderful ceramicist and designer.

And I like Clarie as a nn.

I doubt today's children will be familiar with SotL . or Art Deco ceramics

If you like it, go for it.

SlightlyTerrifiedButPolite · 03/06/2026 11:52

I also literally hear Anthony Hopkins voice just reading it! Clah-Reeeeeess. I mean everyone who greets her will have to say “Hello, Clarice” and it is literally the line from the movie!

Can’t he think of another female heroine who is a bad ass? some ideas -
— Ellen as in Ellen Ripley / Signourney Weaver in Alien movies
— Erin as in Erin Brockervich
— Diana as in Wonder Woman
— Evelyn as in Rachel Weiss in The Mummy

My 30 year old daughters middle name is Clarice, she loves it and would have liked it as her main name, she’s never seen silence of the lambs so is unaware of the connection.
