Thoughts on Clarice?

My husband so badly wants to name our daughter Clarice but I can’t help but think of silence of the lambs and that’s exactly the character he wants to name her after cause he thinks she’s a badass. I suggested Clarisse instead but he says no if it’s not spelled the same. I picked the middle names after my grandmother so I really want to let him lead on the first name so I just need some outside opinions on the name.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I’m 39 and immediately thought of Silence of the Lambs, and I didn’t even watch the film. (Clarissa makes me think of “Explains It All”. Me, a true millennial)

That said, nobody of your daughter’s generation or even currently sub 20 has probably heard of that film.

ThreeStripeQueen · 30/05/2026 12:30

I could hear Hannibal Lecter instantly, just like Clarissa makes me hear “Grrrab that crrab, Clarissa, Eat that meat, Jennifer” from the Two Fat Ladies and Clarrie makes me hear “Ow Eddaay” from The Archers.

lottiegarbanzo · 30/05/2026 12:44

I think it’s lovely and would pronounce it Clar-iss like Clarice Cliffe, not Cla-Reece, which sounds like an American variant.

Don't agree to any name you dislike, either if you.
Other names ..
Clare
Clarissa
Carenza
Clarenza
Clara

StationJack · 30/05/2026 13:11

Clarenza? Is that a name? It looks like a typo.

SkippitySkoppity · 30/05/2026 13:27

I definitely hear Hannibal Lecter's slithery voice saying her name.

Putting ole cage face Hannibal aside, I think it's quite pretty.

BCBird · 30/05/2026 13:29

No. Silence of the Lambs vibes. Aren't there any other names of bad ass women?

Notsosweetcaroline · 30/05/2026 13:31

yeah silence of the lambs for me too, and said in lectors voice. I also dislike the name, Clarissa is lovely though,

Maddy70 · 30/05/2026 13:33

No.... Honestly don't .
It's silence of the lambs and I know a Clarice and she is horrible person So it h as a very negative connotations for me :)

giemepeace · 30/05/2026 13:58

A generation certainly will think of the movie. Younger ones won’t though. I quite like it but not sure I’d use it for this reason.

StationJack · 30/05/2026 14:34

@giemepeace , you don't know that. Films often get remade or become popular again.

I don't happen to like it but like the Clarice Cliffe association.

Firebird83 · 30/05/2026 14:42

I think Cla-REECE is the American pronunciation and it’s usually CLA-riss in Britain.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 30/05/2026 15:01

Silence of the lambs. An ex of mine used to say “clarisssssssse” which was funny.

ginasevern · 30/05/2026 16:41

I love it. It's a really solid yet pretty name. I'm well old enough to remember Silence of the Lambs but it certainly wouldn't instantly spring to mind. And by the time she's older, very few people will automatically think of it or even be aware of it. Any more than they'd think of Kelly when they hear the name Grace.

LivingTheDreamish · 30/05/2026 16:44

Clarissa - lovely
Clarice as in Cliff - lovely
Clar-EES - I just couldn’t

It’s not just the creepy vibes. It’s like he wants to make her name a kind of joke.

Britishtrees · 30/05/2026 16:52

Carys

Italiangreyhound · 30/05/2026 17:07

I'm afraid I don't like it and even more I'd hate to be named after a woman in an 80s horror movie.

There are tons of bad ass women but better for her to be her own woman, with her own name.

I's strongly suggest you find a name you both like. Even if it means re thinking the middle names.

agggtm · 30/05/2026 17:12

Have the lambs stopped screaming?

Bedheadbeachbum · 30/05/2026 17:13

It's quid pro quo Clarice.

I just couldn't, it's such a scary movie and I'd be reminded of it every day.

nocoolnamesleft · 30/05/2026 17:16

As I opened the thread, I was making that Hannibal Lecter noise.

Glitchymn1 · 30/05/2026 17:17

Whatadayyyyyyy · 30/05/2026 10:42

I read that in Hannibal lecters voice

😂

Allmarbleslost · 30/05/2026 17:20

Fava beans and a nice Chianti

Mimilamore · 30/05/2026 17:34

I love it and like Clarrie as a nn, who cares that other’s have borne the name before. It can a homage to Clarrie Grundy!!

KrazyKatty · 30/05/2026 17:36

It’s my granny’s name. Clarice Maude Adelaide. 😁

DiscoBeat · 30/05/2026 17:43

I love that name. We had that for a girl (had boys). But in our case named after a great aunt.
