Could anyone help with deciding between our shortlist of names please. We're down to Susannah, Melody, Rosa and Esther.

I like Melody and Rosa.

I really dislike Esther, I find it too Biblical (unless you want that) and don’t like the sound much. Susannah is ok but don’t love the nicknames.

I'm a Rosanna, my sister is Esther 😂

FasterSmootherBrighterRicher · 23/05/2026 13:19

They are all beautiful names! If you have a family of girls, you should use them all, I’m imagining sisters with these names. 😊 Susannah was on our list, we used another similar name instead. It’s my favourite on your list. I think if I had 3 girls now, I’d call them Susannah, Esther & Rosa. Maybe keep Melody as a middle name, it seems a bit different to the others. I read another thread with Adelaide, I think it would go well here too. Beautiful!

Rose is enough, but it still seems a bit wet to me. Probably because it is a flower and overused as a middle name. From the OP's list, Rosa is the harshest-sounding one.

I don't understand the need for 'nn potential'.

It’s not the potential it’s the inevitability.

We resolutely call our daughter by her full name, as do her educational setting, grandparents and carers.

However at some point in her life she may decide she’d rather go by the shortened version, as is her right, and so we made sure we were on board with what it would inevitably be shortened to.

For example I don’t like Liz or Libby as nicknames for Elizabeth so that wasn’t on the cards. Ditto Alex or Sandy for Alexandra.

EmpressaurusKitty · 23/05/2026 13:58

They’re all pretty & most importantly, none of them are ‘cute’.

NamingNoNames · 23/05/2026 14:14

@AmIReallyTheGrownup , I meant the MN need for it.
The inevitability is there in that you can't guarantee that your little Jennifer might call herself Jen or Jenny when older.
What I don't understand is the 'Evangeline because it has so many options - Evie, Eve, Eva, Evan, Van, Angie, Ellie, Gigi'
or the 'Suki but we'll put Susannah on the BC as it will look better if she's a High Court Judge' type ones.

Esther

roshi42 · 23/05/2026 14:58

I like them all. Like the H spelling for Susannah - I like the name Hannah though.

I’d consider what short names you’d use day to day. I don’t like Mel or Sue so much. But Suki is lovely. Love Essie for Esther. Rosa/Rosie might be the most commonly in use right now, if that matters to you.

ginasevern · 23/05/2026 16:40

Don't like Melody, too twee and probably not great when she's older. But Susannah and Esther are good strong names, with a preference for Susannah.

Firebird83 · 23/05/2026 18:32

Ahhh I love Susannah and Esther! I also like the Susanna spelling. Love Susie as a nn. I would have happily gone with either of these for my DD but my DH didn’t like them.

beeble347 · 23/05/2026 18:36

Love Rosa, if we had a DD it's a possible middle name for us!

Susannah/Susie not my favourite, a little clunky and dated to me. Esther is either going to be perceived as pretty or clunky I think. Melody is a pretty name but might come off a bit working class. I like it though!

Lisanne55 · 23/05/2026 18:38

Susannah or Rosa.

PurpleNightingale · 23/05/2026 18:40

Susannah or Melody. Esther feels clunky and Rosa is less interesting to me, but then I know a Rose and a Rosalie so it just feels very similar. Susie is so cute.

LivingTheDreamish · 23/05/2026 18:43

I've always liked Susannah. I think the h is traditional but personally would leave it off. I also like Esther, which is old fashioned but never frumpy.

To me Rosa is a less nice version of Rose. Why not use Rose.

Do not like Melody. It's a word not a name.

greenfingers2026 · 23/05/2026 19:38

Esther for me - beautiful name. Melody is my least favourite.

hereforthelolz · 23/05/2026 19:39

I love Melody

MeekSqueak · 23/05/2026 19:45

Susannah is my favourite from your list.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 23/05/2026 20:50

Susannah definitely. You can also have Zanna for short.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 23/05/2026 20:52

Susannah definitely
