My husband and i can't agree on a name for our baby girl and we're running out of time

We have about 6 weeks left and i love the name Isolde but my husband thinks it sounds too old and hard to pronounce, he keeps pushing for Luna which i think is way too popular right now, our older daughter is named Elara so it needs to flow well with that and not sound too similar, i also really like Seren and Calla but i'm not sure if they're too unusual for everyday life, has anyone named their daughter something uncommon and actually loved it long-term or did you end up regretting going unique over something more familiar

I dont think Seren is all that uncommon, they aren't everywhere but its a well known name. I like it.

I've met one Calla, but never heard of any others, but its not outthere to me (her brother is Tyger which i do consider outthere). It pretty and i think of the flower.

I think Luna is overdone and a bit of a name teenagers would choose. I also think it wouldnt suit all types of women very well.

Isolde is lovely, but may well get pronunication issues.

I like Calla and Seren best personally. Luna the least, but going by popularity i'm obviously in the minority there.

Have you considered Stella or maybe Estella if 2 E names dont bother you. Iona, Astrid, Lyra - they feel like they have a similar vibe

What other names does your husband like?

For me if you dont want Luna and he doesnt want Isolde, Seren and Calla. Then you go back to the drawing board and offer more names you like.

MrsMitford3 · 18/05/2026 07:34

I now at least 6 dogs called Luna right now.

You have plenty of time @CosyLimeTraybake but I'd put a line through Luna.

I think Seren is lovely and I also like Isolde but something about Calla I don't like.

Maybe have a fresh look at names.
Whilst I agree you want names with a similar vibe-for example you don't want Tiger Lily and Ann-I think you are naming a person for life and it doesn't have to "go" with their siblings name so much as not jar with it.

JuliettaCaeser · 18/05/2026 07:37

Always liked Iseult ?

Dizzydrizzy · 18/05/2026 07:40

Seren is pretty common here. Luna is too common now imo.

What about Xanthe, Cassiopeia or Serena?

Whataflippincircus · 18/05/2026 00:33

Every other dog on the park is called Luna.

The other is a poodle cross called Teddy

Notmyreality · 18/05/2026 07:41

Have you considered Barbara?

Turnitoffnonagain · 18/05/2026 07:42

Serena is lovely and flows nicely.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 18/05/2026 07:45

I really like Calla and Seren (with a slight preference for Calla). I would go for Calla Seren or Seren Calla.

Isolde sounds much too old-fashioned to me (but that’s probably due to my DACH background).
Luna isn’t my cup of tea but it would be a good middle name for Seren. Seren Luna is nice!

Tooobvious · 18/05/2026 07:45

Calla is fine, far less unusual than Elara (which I’ve never heard before).

Sunnyalotments · 18/05/2026 07:47

My daughter is Kerenza and I love her name. Unusual but easy to work out the pronunciation.

Of your options I don't think Isolde is that unusual. I personally prefer Seren.

Try looking through some books / websites together to get more possibilities then you may be able to find one you both agree on. It took a long time for DH and I to agree as well.

sesquipedalian · 18/05/2026 07:51

I think Elara and Isolde is lovely - Ellie and Izzy.

faerylune · 18/05/2026 09:07

I really love Isolde
other ideas
Cecily
Beatrice
Lumina
Maryelle
Nerissa
Idony
Daphne
Cordelia

SleepingStandingUp · 18/05/2026 09:15

you have 40 odd days after birth to register her, so maybe you need to wait and see what fits her?

have to say I'm not keen on Isolde. seren isn't that unusual these days. calla is pretty but may well end up as callie

dailyconniptions · 18/05/2026 09:25

Luna is too close to Loony
Isolde sounds ugly - 'iz older'
Seren is pretty common and OK
Calla isn't that unusual and is v pretty, so I'd choose that!

steppemum · 18/05/2026 10:08

I think Isolde is really unusual and very pretty .

All the names you have mentioned are good names, and go with your older dd's name.
But I would say Luna is the no. 1 dog's name at the moment, so I wouldn't use it.

I love the meaning of Seren too.

Lins77 · 18/05/2026 10:15

Isolde is really pretty and most people will not know the associations (hopefully she doesn't marry a Tristan though!).

How about Cassia?

Peanutlicious · 18/05/2026 13:36

Isolde is lovely

Latinglow · 18/05/2026 14:32

I like luna. I don’t think it’s too popular I’ve never met one and I currently know a lot of babies

JuliettaCaeser · 18/05/2026 15:34

It’s heavily used for dogs though.

Squirrelchops1 · 18/05/2026 15:36

Friends dog is called Seren.

How about Eleri.

user1492757084 · 19/05/2026 10:10

Elara and ..
Aster
Isotta
Ingrid
Prudence

HighburyHope · 19/05/2026 10:17

Selene or Estella?

Sparklinggreen · 19/05/2026 10:41

What about Serena? To address your concern that Seren is a bit unusual

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 19/05/2026 10:43

I have a Luna. She's 4, enjoys bog snorkelling and is very hairy. We meet at least another 6 Luna's a week in the park.

I would counsel against calling a second child a name ending in A. It does something weird to your brain when your kids names sound the same and you mix them up constantly.
