My husband and i can't agree on a name for our baby girl and we're running out of time

We have about 6 weeks left and i love the name Isolde but my husband thinks it sounds too old and hard to pronounce, he keeps pushing for Luna which i think is way too popular right now, our older daughter is named Elara so it needs to flow well with that and not sound too similar, i also really like Seren and Calla but i'm not sure if they're too unusual for everyday life, has anyone named their daughter something uncommon and actually loved it long-term or did you end up regretting going unique over something more familiar

I love the name Isolde . I went to school with one actually and also have liked it since the film . And the film was actually filmed in my grandparents village so it is more special to me. I’ve always said if i have a girl it’s that name. Luna i hate as it’s a pets name and seren will constantly get called Serena. Your choice you go for the name you want. He didn’t grow and push the baby out you did.

I would go for your choice. We were in a similar position, my husband had a very very limited selection of names he liked. Having been through pregnancy and childbirth, I honestly feel now that whilst parenting decisions generally are equal, that you get final say.

I would go your name for first name, your husband's choice for middle.

Of course we don’t get ‘final say’ ffs

Sashya · 18/05/2026 01:39

I am with your husband on Luna - it works well with your DD's name.
Isolde is an old and sad name. And your other names are strange.

Wauwinet · 18/05/2026 03:21

Tell your husband that your daughter doesn’t deserve to have a childhood full of “Our dog is named Luna!” and “We have a cat called Luna!” every time she introduces herself. Frankly I wouldn’t be impressed with my husband’s name suggestion for our human child being the most popular pet name of the past decade. Really put a lot of thought in, didn’t he? Hmm

I like Isolde but it doesn’t go with Elara really.

🤣

My name is a common dogs name. It was quite odd at one point thinking I was constantly being bellowed at in the park!

How do you pronounce Isolde?

I read it as is old.

It's pronounced Is-old-a or Iz-old-a.

It's a beautiful name OP. I know a young Isolde and everyone says her name just fine.

Edited

Okay thank you. I've never come across it before.

Chelseaflowershowcrisis · 18/05/2026 04:23

A few alternative choices:
Liesel
Iona
Azalea
Zinnia
Marina
Marika

Damsonjam1 · 18/05/2026 04:45

Seren is a lovely name. Until reading this thread I wouldn't have known how to pronounce Isolde, so your daughter is likely to go through life with people mispronouncing it. Luna, to me, is a dogs name. Calla is OK, although makes me think gas. You have plenty of time though. You don't have to register births for 40 days. When your dear daughter is born, see what suits. DH let me choose after seeing what effort goes into giving birth. I hope yours does too.

mellongoose · 18/05/2026 04:58

I was at school with an Eseld (similar). She is lovely and fun.

kezzieeve · 18/05/2026 05:52

My ds has 2 Serens in his class and we are in SE England, I dont think it’s unusual at all.
it sounds like you can’t agree on any of the names given, is there no name you both like?

poodlemum01 · 18/05/2026 06:14

The only one I like is Luna, the others are odd and pretentious.

Heraldry · 18/05/2026 06:31

How about Stella rather than Luna? Or Elodie/Eloise to go with the E of your older daughter.

Thoughts on names:
A lot of people may mispronounce Isolde, do you want this for your daughter?
Calla will probably get teased about gas/having wind. Luna may get teased as turned in to Lunatic, or get toilet jokes (from Loo, or rhyming Luna/poona etc). Kids can be cruel.
Seren sounds very like Saran, the American term for cling film.

Mumofgirls2017 · 18/05/2026 06:34

I think seren or calla go well. My kids have unusual names and I still love them. They do have more familiar nn’s though. I know an Isolde nn Izzy? Just a thought. I agree Luna v popular and will likely become dated.

Elara and….

Cassia
Cora
Dalia
Stella
Cleo
Theia
Nina
Celeste
Zelda
Cosima
Lumi
Callie
Willa

Bournetilly · 18/05/2026 06:36

My favourite out of the names listed is Luna (and I usually like unusual names). Isolde would be pronounced wrong constantly.

828Pax · 18/05/2026 06:38

I know 3 Seren's!

bluejewels · 18/05/2026 06:40

Ds26 would have been Seren if he was a girl. It's a beautiful name. I also like Luna. Not keen on Isolde. Prefer Callie to Calla.

Pernicketywishes · 18/05/2026 06:46

If you like Seren - which is Welsh for star, perhaps another Welsh name?

I know an Eluned who gets called Luna sometimes as a nn.

Another lovely welsh name is Eira - Welsh for snow or Enfys - Welsh for rainbow 🌈

MayFlyBee · 18/05/2026 06:47

Does Althea fit your vibe? If i had had a girl I loved Althea and I feel it’s similar to the ones you like. A friend has an Elowen, which is maybe too close to Elara, but similarly pretty.

PrincessOfPreschool · 18/05/2026 06:57

I know one Calla! I think it's a lovely name, I had Calla lillies on wedding bouquet. Not keen on Isolde. DD will have a lifetime of mispronunciation and correction ahead. I have a relatively simple name to pronounce and people get it wrong all the time - but what's more irritating is that they continue to mispronounce it even after I've told them. I don't bother anymore!

TISagoodday · 18/05/2026 07:05

Elara and Imogen
Elara and Colette
Elara and Romily
Elara and Rosalie
Elara and Avalon
Elara and Tamsin
Elara and Morven
Elara and Iris
Elara and Arwen
Elara and Heidi

TasteOfHerCherryChapstick · 18/05/2026 07:15

My mum's cat is called Luna
I sold E - sounds like a confession
I like Calla the most.
The only Seren I have heard of is dominatrix called Seren Sins!

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 18/05/2026 07:20

I love Seren! Not too odd, is quite common in wales, but not in rest of uk. Does mean many people will have heard it.

Dee51121 · 18/05/2026 07:21

What about Una or Oona? Your husband may go for it and you'd avoid the common pet name issue.

Out of the ones you've mentioned I would go Seren. I think it goes well with Elara, it has the celestial feel like Luna so your husband may see it as a compromise, and it's not super common but is familiar enough that most people will probably know how to pronounce and spell it.

queenceleste · 18/05/2026 07:23

I think having a distinct name from the sibling means they won’t always be called the wrong one. Seren is gorgeous. Luna is lovely but it still feels very Harry Potter to me
