LynetteScavo · 20/06/2008 23:20

Sorry, I really don't like Silvia. Silvie isn't quite so bad.

somersetmum · 20/06/2008 23:20

I know of a two month-old baby Sylvia.

I love Sylvia.

It is one of my best friends' names ands is really pretty.

She gets shorteneed to Sylv though!!!

nellyonthetelly · 21/06/2008 11:02

I love Sylvia and Sylvie - seriously considered both for my firts, but couldn't persuade my other half! I decided I liked Sylvie best, but I think your idea is better, calling her Sylvia and shortening to Sylvie. Go for it!

AllieBongo · 23/06/2008 17:51

My dd is called Sylvia. It suits her down to the ground. I must admit though, I did call her in Boots the other day and an old lady answered. I love it though...

dizzydixies · 23/06/2008 17:53

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE it but dh won't have it as a girl at their school when they were younger was rather friendly with pretty much ALL the lads at the high school -charming eh?!?

Sylvie would have been my preference had it not been binned

have you considered Sylvanna nn Sylvie?

Heated · 23/06/2008 18:13

Sylvie is lovely, totally impractical with our surname, so I envy anyone who can use it

BreeVanDerCampLGJ · 23/06/2008 18:16

Sylvie is lovely.

Sylvia reminds of the Dr Hook song.

AllieBongo · 23/06/2008 20:10

yes, people sing that to me oft!

XantheP · 09/07/2008 20:36

My 6-month-old daughter is called Silvie. It really suits her

GoneAnon · 09/07/2008 21:51

Sylvia is my name, I have hated it all my life (fortunately I have another name too). I think my parents were thinking Victorian when they christened me, but I have suffered from the ciggie smoking, bingo playing stereotype mentioned by greenelizabeth below.

I was the only Sylvia at my rather posh girls school, and at university, I noticed that people seemed to have assumptions about my background, that weren't flattering.

The name is so rarely discussed, that it's nice to see that some people think it is elegant and old-fashioned.

GoneAnon · 09/07/2008 21:52

Oh and I am very familiar with both those songs, Who is Sylvia, and Sylvias mother said, which many people seem to think are hilariously funny to sing at me.

GoneAnon · 09/07/2008 21:54

Its also incredibly difficult to say. I have never managed anything better than "Sulvia"
god this is cathartic, a lifetime of hating my name coming out here!

Maybe the connotations are changing now though. Ive noticed a lot of young polish girls are called Silvia.

rolymoma · 09/07/2008 22:10

i love both versions - it's my mum's name and i think it has a really sexy sassy 60's type thing about it - which may not be what you were thinking for your new DD! i like the letter formation too .... but that's just me possibly

Twinklemegan · 09/07/2008 22:14

There's another alternative that's not been mentioned, but as she'll just get called Sylvia anyway there's no point in adding any extra letters. I don't like my name btw.
