I like it shortend to Sylvie. My lovely very favourite aunt was Sylvia so it's all great connotations to me.

Don't like it personally, but I guess I wouldn't as it is DP's ex wife's name!

greenelizabeth · 20/06/2008 19:40

I really liked this 6 yrs ago when I was pg with DD.

TO a lot of people in the UK, Sylvia is a died blonde, tattooed, 30 ciggies a day, bing0 players name. I could get past that though.

Sylvie the new Sophie?

hifi · 20/06/2008 19:41

just do sylvie, its french or italian i think.

constancereader · 20/06/2008 19:41

Sylvia is an elegant lovely name imo.

snooks · 20/06/2008 19:45

I love sylvia or sylvie

it was on our list along with
pearl
ella
sophia
pia
ursula
estelle

I say go for it, it's beautiful

DrNortherner · 20/06/2008 19:57

I don't like it personally, but thas only because when I was a kid we lived opposite a sylvia and she was not vety nice.

Just a bad association.

Miyazaki · 20/06/2008 20:03

I really like it, had it on my list for ds2 had he been a girl

snooks · 20/06/2008 20:13

Miyazaki

we went for Pearl in the end (2nd name Lois - grandma's name) but I still hanker after Ursula - I love it, will have to be hypothetical dd4 name though because I'm not going thru pregnancy again lol

Takver · 20/06/2008 20:17

Beautiful and elegant, Sylvie is a lovely shortening. Also useful in that it works across most of the European languages. It was one of my shortlists for DD (who has a similarly french/english name)

LazyLinePainterJane · 20/06/2008 20:19

I love it, but DH has an awful relative by that name that the whole family hates.

PurlyQueen · 20/06/2008 20:47

this is my mum's name, so I love it

ProfessorGrammaticus · 20/06/2008 20:51

Sylvie lovely. Sylvia a bit old ladyish for me

Marina · 20/06/2008 20:53

Love it - would have been a terrible clash with family name though
We have similar trans-European names too takver
Also love Ursula, very pretty

Very nice, prefer Sylvie to Sylvia though.

differentID · 20/06/2008 20:56

I love Sylvia. DH2B loathes it and won't even consider it on our hypothetical baby girls name list

Weegiemum · 20/06/2008 23:15

We had a mad neighbour called sylvia when I was a kid.

So it makes me hear her husband yelling 'nooooo syyyyyyllllviiia aaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh' in a very broad kent accent.

So I would go for Sylvie if it was me!

want2bayummymummy · 20/06/2008 23:18

reminds me of an old woman used toknow she was one scary mama
