Thoughts on Rupert?

I really like the name Rupert. It’s been a name that’s I’m liking more and more.

I’m aware it’s quite a marmite name and I’m not sure if it would bother me if family/friends didn’t like it.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I want to say it as Wupert every time I see it but I’m not sure why. I wonder if it’s a quote from something?

I think Lavinia in Riders couldn't pronounce her Rs?

HaroldMeaker · 27/04/2026 20:03

make me think of dishy Rupert Everett (old)
the only rupert I know is French and an artist, so I really like it

Genuinely, who is that? I suddenly can’t think of a single famous Rupert.

Rupert Grint.

You're obviously not a Harry Potter fan!

Calliopespa · 27/04/2026 20:59

I think the Bear is well and truly forgotten - and so what anyway.

It's fine OP. I'd slightly expect him to be a bit of a mummy's boy, but we all define our own name with our own style and in any case, there are much worse things in this world than a mummy's boy!

It is a proper name, it isn't over-used and if you like it I'd go for it.

Ladyinamask · 27/04/2026 21:15

It's actually quite popular at the moment around our way at the moment I have come across quite a few little Ruperts.
I think I prefer the English Robert which seems rarer at the moment.

PippaToryFripp · 27/04/2026 21:18

Everyone knows his name.

Lucia573 · 27/04/2026 21:24

It’s fine. Probably will be more popular/familiar due to Rivals!

Rupert is dreadful. It’s such a wet and slightly comedic name.

First post nails it. Wet lettuce.

WydeStrype · 27/04/2026 21:35

The only one I currently know is really spoilt and sulky and can do no wrong. It has ruined the name for me tbh.

I knew a baby Rupert years ago and it really seemed very sweet on a baby and suited him. He was growing up in a very large listed detached property with siblings with similarly posh names though.

It is interesting that others have mentioned names like Oscar - they used to be considered posh but have become much more everyday now. Rupert has not made that transition.

Sogrownup3 · 27/04/2026 21:36

It is the wettest name - sorry but it gives me the ick

PolkaDotPorridge · 27/04/2026 21:37

I love it!

MumOfOne90 · 27/04/2026 21:46

My nearly 2 year old is called Rupert - we’re definitely not posh! Ru bear and Ru gets used but mainly Rupert 🥰

Giraffehaver · 27/04/2026 22:19

Nope not for me. Crack on if you like it but wet

Norastroud · 27/04/2026 22:36

Oh I like the name Rupert! Similar vibes to Barnaby and Sebastian to me.

Berlinlover · 27/04/2026 22:54

Awful but I live in Ireland where it would out of the question to name your child something like Rupert.

Delici · 27/04/2026 22:56

I know three adult Ruperts and all are lovely men.

Branleuse · 27/04/2026 22:58

I love the name and have recently sadly lost a friend with that name. We all called him Roo.

Bbq1 · 28/04/2026 21:52

Cute

wahwahwoo · 28/04/2026 21:56

Awful and too posh.

CalpolOnToast · 28/04/2026 22:09

When DH was in the army they called the officers ruperts...

However if you like it you should use it. My nephew has a similarly posh name and I would previously have said I didn't like it, but because it's on him I think it's lovely. So you hopefully don't have to worry too much about friends and family.

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 28/04/2026 22:43

To me, it’s in the same category as Malcolm and Timothy! Limp, wet names 😖

piloswi · 29/04/2026 17:25

Thank you everyone. It’s definitely confirmed it’s a marmite name.

If we do go with it his nn would be ‘Ru’. We have a few other names on the list but Rupert is my current favourite but we have a little while to think on it

OP posts:
Bellybellas · 09/05/2026 08:24

It’s awful, almost comedy like.

Inmyuggs · 09/05/2026 08:52

Love it
