Thoughts on Rupert?

I really like the name Rupert. It’s been a name that’s I’m liking more and more.

I’m aware it’s quite a marmite name and I’m not sure if it would bother me if family/friends didn’t like it.

Ha, there’s a Rupert in my family and we are definitely not posh. He’s not wet or weak either. Use it if you like it.

UrsulaBelle · 27/04/2026 14:40

It's got very posh connotations to me. I prefer Reuben if you want Roo.

Annonydormouse · 27/04/2026 14:41

I love marmite and loathe the name Rupert. It's just a bit....soggy. Wupert. But if I ever met a Rupert I would certainly never let on.

Jrisix · 27/04/2026 14:42

I knew an adult Rupert - very charismatic, very popular, athlete, with a PhD and a lovely Northern accent. So I have a positive association with it.

Odd that. I like Reuben. I somehow sounds less soggy.

I wouldn't trust a Rupert as far as I could throw one.

Why though? I don't understand anyone who judges someone because of their name given very few of us choose our names.
OP I know a lovely little Rupert. It's not a name I would have chosen but it has grown on me.
Whatever name you chose some people will hate it so don't let that bother you and think about what you like.
There are many worse names than Rupert.

I want to say it as Wupert every time I see it but I’m not sure why. I wonder if it’s a quote from something?

Daffodilsinthespring · 27/04/2026 16:19

Lovely, but a few about now

FrenchandSaunders · 27/04/2026 16:21

The Ruperts I know are cocks and wear mustard cords ...

mismomary · 27/04/2026 16:23

I think it’s lovely. But be aware he’s likely to be Roo or Rupes at school.

TokenGinger · 27/04/2026 16:26

I love it.

Wynter25 · 27/04/2026 16:27

Awful

WhatNextImScared · 27/04/2026 16:30

Outrageously posh. I suppose fine if you are too, and he’ll be sent to Winchester or whatever. An encumbrance if you’re not.

champagnetrial · 27/04/2026 14:38

You are right - it is a marmite name, so you have to decide whether you like it or not. Personally I'm a big marmite lover, so I say Yes!

(Also - No one charismatic or shaggable has ever been named Rupert. Um, apart from the Handsomest Man in England™)

Genuinely, who is that? I suddenly can’t think of a single famous Rupert.

MaxJLHardy · 27/04/2026 16:47

One way of guaranteeing he won’t join the army.

deeahgwitch · 27/04/2026 16:52

IHateWasps · 27/04/2026 12:17

Rupert is dreadful. It’s such a wet and slightly comedic name.

I agree.
I think of Rupert Bear

LassiKopiano24 · 27/04/2026 16:57

I wouldn’t pick it personally but don’t hate it, I wouldn’t think what an awful name if I met a Rupert, I can’t recall ever meeting one.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 27/04/2026 17:07

I absolutely love it!

I'd tentatively suggest considering what sort of circles you tend to move in. If he's likely to grow up in Marlow and go to boarding school, he'll fit right in. If you live in a rough part of Middlesbrough and he's heading for the local comp, perhaps the name might bring additional challenges!

cottingleyfairy · 27/04/2026 17:09

No, he’ll be a wet lettuce.
Or smarmy, like Rupert Rigsby.

Rupert Campbell Black?

Greenaeonium · 27/04/2026 14:15

Proper wanky name imo— right up there with Quentin, Crispin, Piers et al but if that’s your vibe go for it

I went to school with a Quentin. What a dickhead. Absolutely loved himself. Still does.

FrenchandSaunders · 27/04/2026 16:21

And they probably wear capes too. Incredibly posh.

duchyorganiclettuce · 27/04/2026 17:27

He's got my vote in the locals next month.

Latenightreader · 27/04/2026 17:30

My friend has a Rupert. I wasn't convinced at all at first, but it quickly grew on me.

Comtesse · 27/04/2026 17:30

Too posh sorry. I work with a nice bloke who is always called Rupes - that’s dreadful too.
