Thoughts on Rupert?

I really like the name Rupert. It’s been a name that’s I’m liking more and more.

I’m aware it’s quite a marmite name and I’m not sure if it would bother me if family/friends didn’t like it.

I love it, it was a potential for one of mine but went with Francis instead. Another name people on MN/reddit thought was wet and weak! I think i just like the soft, sweet names. I loved Sidney, Julian etc
Love Roo for short
Also liked Rufus if I had a redhead!
It's a solid name for a nice boy
Not many bear associations nowadays

Lots of these names get called wet and weak by some posters and I find myself wondering what names they choose for their DC. Probably things like Kai, Cooper and Jackson which I think are awful - but wouldn't life be dull if we all liked the same things

woolshop · 27/04/2026 12:57

My English grandson is Rupert and I’m Australian so I intend to call him Ru when he’s older as a nod to his Australian roots.
I love the name!

comfyshoes2022 · 27/04/2026 13:02

I like it a lot. One consideration for me is the association with Rupert Murdoch.

Onefortheroad25 · 27/04/2026 13:03

Never heard it here in Ireland but I’m sure there’s one somewhere. Probably in Foxrock.
It’s a very a posh, well to do name imo.
It’s not bad, better than some of the wet blanket names we see on here. Damian, Graham, Tim etc

Chuffingcupboard · 27/04/2026 13:05

I am old so think of the bear (GPs used to cut out the comic strip and post to me). Haven't met any real life ones until very recently where there is a 3 year old in wider family. I quite like it but wonder if it will suddenly be everywhere.

nopeandnopeandnope · 27/04/2026 13:07

Not a fan but if you like it then go for it.

SouthLondonMum22 · 27/04/2026 13:09

My 3 year old is Rupert. I love it, obviously. We overall get positive comments about his name and his family nickname is Roo.

OneMoreCoffee3 · 27/04/2026 13:24

I have one, he’s 13. He’s known as Ru and at home I call him Rupey or Poopy. Honestly, I didn’t know it was a posh name and just thought it was an old name not used very much anymore. It was marmite, you’re right. Some people loved it and I’ve had a few people I know go on to use it after me. He wishes we’d called him something else from the shortlist, I’ve had moments of liking and disliking it over the years

mambojambodothetango · 27/04/2026 13:32

I know a 11 year old Rupert, known as Rupes. It doesn't suit him and I'm not sure it suits anyone who isn't minor nobility with a couple Jags in the drive.

idontlikedogsmuch · 27/04/2026 13:33

Makes me think of Rupert Lowe.

Villanousvillans · 27/04/2026 13:34

I love it ❤️.

user1492757084 · 27/04/2026 13:56

Rupert is a strong and handsome name.
I know two lovely men called Rupert.

OttersOnAPlane · 27/04/2026 13:59

I know a very excellent cat called Rupert. I did know one at university many moons ago, and he was definitely of the landed-gentry-no-chin sort.

PurpleReindeer2 · 27/04/2026 14:02

Sorry OP but I really don't like it.

sallymonella · 27/04/2026 14:04

I don't like it, I'm now singing the Rupert the Bear theme tune whilst the other half of my brain is repeating Rupes over and over again in an exaggeratedly posh voice.

Gentlydoesit2 · 27/04/2026 14:08

Awful

TheeNotoriousPIG · 27/04/2026 14:10

I like it!

Greenaeonium · 27/04/2026 14:15

Proper wanky name imo— right up there with Quentin, Crispin, Piers et al but if that’s your vibe go for it

Seriouslyoverit · 27/04/2026 14:15

I love it - probably largely because I had a dear colleague/ friend with the name. Close friends did call him Rupes.
Also know a primary aged lovely boy with the name ( and a sibling called Albie.
If you love it use it.
My DS has a v traditional/ popular name and a cutesy nickname - not everyone loves it no matter what you pick !

Firebird83 · 27/04/2026 14:18

I know someone who named her DS Rupert and changed it to Robert after a few weeks 😁

NormasArse · 27/04/2026 14:18

We have a 2 year old Rupert at nursery; he’s gorgeous, and most definitely not wet!

Rupert Everett is also gorgeous and unwet!! 😁

garlictwist · 27/04/2026 14:27

I agree that it's dreadful and wet. No one charismatic or shaggable has ever been named Rupert.

DaisyMayBojangles · 27/04/2026 14:27

Awful

fudgesmummy · 27/04/2026 14:35

We’ve got a cat called Rupert!
When we were trying to decide what to name him and his litter mate we Googled ‘Posh boy names’
We already had a Hugo and we decided on Oscar for his litter mate.
Since then we also had Jasper and Raife (RIP 🥲)
If we had any more I’ve got Rudyard and Thadius on my list! 😆

champagnetrial · 27/04/2026 14:38

You are right - it is a marmite name, so you have to decide whether you like it or not. Personally I'm a big marmite lover, so I say Yes!

(Also - No one charismatic or shaggable has ever been named Rupert. Um, apart from the Handsomest Man in England™)
