Is Gwendolyn really that unpopular as a baby name?

I'm just about to go overdue with my second baby. DH and I have decided on Gwendolyn Puck as first and middle names. I wanted Puck as a first name but it rhymes with the F word and also sounds like pucker (pucker up? 🤮) so that's why it's been downgraded to a middle name. Loads of people I've mentioned Gwendolyn as a name to have either hated it or just said "oh" or something equally along the lines of 'if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything'. Is Gwendolyn (Gwen) a horrible name?

Puck will definitely take the focus off Gwendolyn, so I don't think you need to worry.

JMSA · Yesterday 13:35

Ooft, it’s ugly. Really sorry.

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · Yesterday 13:36

Gwendolyn Puck sounds really awful.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · Yesterday 13:37

Gwendolyn isn’t too bad but I don’t like Gwen and think there are nicer names out there but puck is terrible

followtheswallow · Yesterday 13:37

I think of Gwendoline Mary Lacey … slightly different spelling I know. But - Puck?

Kitt1 · Yesterday 13:38

My mum was called Gwendolyn and hated it. She never used it and preferred to go by her middle name.

Unfortunately, your choice of middle name is equally bizarre so be prepared for your child to change her name completely when she’s a bit older.

ComeOnJ · Yesterday 13:39

I really like Gwen. Gwendolyn is a lot of name and makes me think or Gwendolyn Mary Lacey.

Puck still sounds like Fuck as a middle name. Also the ice hockey thing. How about Robin if you want to reference MND?

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · Yesterday 13:39

Gwendolyn is very Enid Blyton, but at least is a name. Puck is, well, a fairy from A Midsummer's Night Dream. And male. And it rhymes, as you say.....

ilovepixie · Yesterday 13:39

Why would you inflict that name on a fellow human being! It’s awful.

Plinketyplonks · Yesterday 13:40

The only association I have with Gwendolyn is the rather wimpy character in that Enid Blyton boarding school series. For that reason I don’t think of it as a strong name although I don’t often meet a Gwen. In reality few people will know her middle name, it’s not like you introduce yourself with all three names so whatever you like.

Daffodilsinthespring · Yesterday 13:41

Gwendolyn is fine. Puck definitely isn’t! Gwen and Gwennie are nice as shortenings.

A lot of people said the same about my dd’s name 30 years ago. It’s in the top 10 now.

Aberdyfi · Yesterday 13:41

I taught a brilliant and beautiful girl called Gwendy. I think it’s great.

sesquipedalian · Yesterday 13:41

Sorry, Puck? Really? And you wanted to give it to your DD as a first name? Poor little sausage.

MrBlobbyScaresMe · Yesterday 13:45

Both names are awful imo. I thought Gwendolyn was bad until I read the middle name. Wtf😖

Johnogroats · Yesterday 13:46

Puck is good for a Dutch cyclist but assuming you’re British or live in Uk I’d stay clear off Puck. Gwen is ok but takes me straight to Malory Towers.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · Yesterday 13:46

Awful names.

AngryLikeHades · Yesterday 13:48

It's a horrific name!
Also... it could be shortened to 'Wendy' and let's think of what that would be like!!
In my opinion, some of these old names that are resurfacing are OK and sometimes nice (rare, but I do like the name 'Maude' and a few others), but most are dire (Dorothy, Keith, Edie).
This is for the majority, subjective of course, but I can't stand some of them.

wiwaprwfimh70 · Yesterday 13:48

Both names are terrible

NamingNoNames · Yesterday 14:16

Gwendoline is OK. A bit different and I know a young one. Not keen on the Gwendolyn spelling.
Puck isn't great.

ginasevern · Yesterday 14:32

I actually like Gwendolyn and at least it's got history, is different and isn't American or made up. But Puck? Just why? It's horribly ugly. Sorry if I'm out of touch and this is some kind of trend. All I know is the Midsummer Nights Dream reference. I can't imagine any girl (or boy) being happy with that, even as a middle name.

watchingthishtread · Yesterday 14:44

Puck? I can only assume you're joking.

NamingNoNames · Yesterday 14:52

Just call her Olivia/Amelia/Isla/Ava/Freya Rose/Grace/May and be done with it.

TheClangyClunk · Yesterday 14:55

I’m partial to a usual name but Gwendolyn is so dowdy. Gwen. It’s just a bit limp and sorry for itself.

And Puck? Holy shitballs OP. As a woman would you like to be called Puck?

pimplebum · Yesterday 14:55

Can you explain puck ? What were you thinking ?

TerracottaBowl · Yesterday 14:56

I genuinely like Gwendoline/Gwendolen, which is Gwen John or Gwendoline Riley for me, not Malory Towers’ perpetual miscreant.

Puck, though? Mischievous hobgoblin, hockey puck, a wild male goat, Puck Fair?
