Is Gwendolyn really that unpopular as a baby name?

I'm just about to go overdue with my second baby. DH and I have decided on Gwendolyn Puck as first and middle names. I wanted Puck as a first name but it rhymes with the F word and also sounds like pucker (pucker up? 🤮) so that's why it's been downgraded to a middle name. Loads of people I've mentioned Gwendolyn as a name to have either hated it or just said "oh" or something equally along the lines of 'if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything'. Is Gwendolyn (Gwen) a horrible name?

I don't get the 'Puck', Puck was a male fairy in 'A Midsummer Night's Dream', what's the point of giving that name to a little girl.

I like Gwendoline (not ending in Lyn), Gwen for short. It's classic.

Gwendolyn is fine.
Puck definitely isn't

Tina46 · Yesterday 15:00

Surely this is rage bait?

JMSA · Yesterday 15:00

Oh Jesus, I assumed Puck was your surname! Why would you saddle her with that out of choice?

toastandegg · Yesterday 15:04

Gwendolyn is fine as is Gwen or Gwennie but Puck?

dailyconniptions · Yesterday 15:04

Those names are dreadful. You did ask. I'd even wonder if this is a wind up.

Baddaybigcloud · Yesterday 15:06

I know one, she goes by Gwennie. She couldn’t spell her full name on her year 6 SATS papers 🤦‍♀️

VividDeer · Yesterday 15:24

Gwen as a name is nice. Although I do know Gwen the dog (and one human).
Puck though, what are you thinking.. is that a real name?

Specialneedsnightmare · Yesterday 15:25

Not keen on either but Puck is beyond dreadful.

MyObservations · Yesterday 15:25

In my experience, Puck is generally considered a boy's name in the UK and Gwendolyn a girl's name. So. If you really want to confuse your child as they grow up and the people they are introduced to, go for it. I certainly wouldn't if I was in your position!

RoseField1 · Yesterday 15:27

Puck????

NamingNoNames · Yesterday 15:28

Puck is generally considered a boy's name in the UK Really? I'd say it was generally considered to be a name of a character in a certain play.
Better than Bottom, I suppose.

Puck isn't a boy's name, it isn't any name, outside of that one Shakespeare play, in which I suppose the character is male, albeit a magical being!

Specialneedsnightmare · Yesterday 15:31

Puck doesn't even sound nice as a word, never mind a name.

LlynTegid · Yesterday 15:31

It's not Gwendolyn that is the issue here.

user2848502016 · Yesterday 15:36

I really don’t like it sorry, I live in wales and the only people called Gwendolyn/Gwen here are older ladies

Puck is even worse especially for a girl

As I said, " in my experience.." so thanks for agreeing 😉

I don't know a single Gwendolyn and it's not a Welsh name just a different spelling of Gwendolyn. I know a few young Gwens but otherwise they'd be about a 100 years old.

tildathyme · Yesterday 15:46

I love Gwen. I quite like the Enid Blyton character too but I haven’t read the books, just watched the series with my kids and the character has great moral development by the end! Puck is unusual but nobody ever really knows your middle name anyway.

Paaseitjes · Yesterday 15:48

Gwen is really common for babies where I live. I think it's nice. Keep Puck as a pet name though.

OurFlagMeansAfternoonTea · Yesterday 15:53

Puck is awful. Why do that to someone you're supposed to love?
Gwendolyn is fine.

Alouest · Yesterday 15:53

I quite like Gwendolyn. Gwen is nice and she could also use Lyn if she wanted. Puck is truly awful.

Waterwaterwaterwaterwatercycle · Yesterday 15:57

I love the name Gwendolyn! Someone I went to university with has a dd named Gwendolyn.

Puck is unusual and I don't think I would like it in my name. Is it because of Midsummer Night's Dream? How about Helena or Summer?

TheatreShop · Yesterday 15:58

Reminds me of Diana Dors real surname - Fluck, so bad, she changed it. Puck is ‘Pucking’ awful.

Mumofteenandtween · Yesterday 16:04

I only know of two “people” called Puck. 1 The fairy in A Midsummers Nights Dream who stuck an ass’s head on Bottom and made Titania fall in love with him. 2 Noah Puckerman in Glee. Played by Mark Salling who later hanged himself after being convicted of child porn offenses.

Either way I am not getting “perfect name for a baby girl” vibes from the name.
